ROUNDUP : Santa Clara Streak Goes to 83 Games
Damien Cantrell scored 34 points and Jess Pena added 17 as Santa Clara High defeated Calabasas, 74-51, in a Frontier League basketball game Tuesday night at Calabasas.
It was the Saints’ 83rd consecutive league victory, the second-longest streak in Southern Section history. Banning won 98 league games in a row from 1983-91.
Santa Clara (15-7, 7-0 in league play), which has won 12 Southern Section titles during Coach Lou Cvijanovich’s 36 years at the school, won 82 consecutive league games from 1956-65.
The Saints’ victory overshadowed a 31-point, 12-rebound performance by sophomore Nick Alexander of Calabasas (10-12, 1-6).
Palmdale 77, Ridgecrest Burroughs 73--Mike Hamelin had 17 points and 12 rebounds at Palmdale as the Falcons (20-3, 14-0) gave Garry Phelps his first 20-win season in 15 years as coach. Demario Brown scored 30 points for the Burros.
Glendale 79, Arcadia 52--Manny Gonzalez scored 20 points and the Dynamiters remained tied with Muir for the Pacific League lead with one game left.
St. Francis 58, St. Paul 48--The Golden Knights (19-5, 10-1) remained one-half game ahead of St. John Bosco in the Del Rey League. Dan Bir had 20 points and Chris Ott added 16 for St. Francis.
Burbank 38, Saugus 37--Brad Warner, who had 13 points and 11 rebounds, gave the Bulldogs a victory with a basket at the buzzer. Warner also hit a jump shot with 31 seconds left and got assists from Jason Jonas on both baskets.
Muir 60, Hoover 48--Eric Walker scored 16 points and Artin Avenessian added 14, but they couldn’t prevent Hoover (8-15, 1-8) from falling in a Pacific League game.
Crescenta Valley 68, Pasadena 61--Richard O’Neill scored 25 points to lead the Falcons (15-8, 5-4) to a Pacific League victory at Pasadena.
Bravo Medical 99, Valley Alternative 47--Despite Mike Lyubarsky’s 12 points, Valley Alternative (1-12) lost in the first round of the Magnet League playoffs.
Harvard-Westlake 73, Alemany 54--Scott Garson and Ben Robbins led the Wolverines (20-2, 10-2) to their first 20-victory season since 1990. Garson had 17 points and six assists, and Robbins had 10 points and seven assists.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Newbury Park 39, Channel Islands 37--Julie Wastell made a 15-foot jump shot with eight seconds to play and stole the ball with two seconds left as the Panthers handed Channel Islands (20-3, 12-1) its first Marmonte League defeat.
Wastell led Newbury Park (12-4, 11-2) with 13 rebounds.
Village Christian 81, L.A. Baptist 51--The Crusaders (21-1, 8-0) capped their second consecutive undefeated season in the Alpha League by scoring a school-record 39 points in the third quarter and equaled their record for most victories in a season.
Simi Valley 57, Westlake 41--Sara Griffin had 23 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Pioneers (15-11, 7-6).
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Cal Lutheran 77, Redlands 62--Melissa Wood made six three-pointers and scored 25 points but the Regals (6-11, 2-6) were dominated in a SCIAC game at Thousand Oaks.
BOYS’ SOCCER
Moorpark 6, Santa Paula 0--Curtis Silverest scored three goals and Pat Russo added two as the Musketeers (22-2, 7-0) clinched their second consecutive Fronter League championship.
