COLLEGE BASKETBALL / WCC ROUNDUP : Mazurie Leads Loyola Rally, Portland Falls
Bill Mazurie came off the bench and scored all of his 18 points during a second-half rally as Loyola Marymount defeated Portland, 88-79, Thursday night in a West Coast Conference game at Portland to extend its winning streak to three games.
The Lions, 5-15 and 4-5 in the WCC, have won four of their last five.
Two baskets by Matt Houle gave the Pilots (11-13, 4-5) a 61-49 lead with 10:45 left, but the Lions went on a 17-4 run in the next five minutes.
Gonzaga 66, Pepperdine 56--The first-place Bulldogs won their 25th consecutive game at the Martin Centre in Spokane.
It marked the first time Gonzaga (16-5, 8-1) has swept the season series from the Waves (12-9, 4-5) since the joining the conference in 1979. The Bulldogs won, 70-48, last week at Malibu.
Pepperdine, which trailed, 43-31, with 14:32 left, tied the score at 50-50 on LeRoi O’Brien’s basket with 7:18 left. But the Waves were outscored, 16-6, the rest of the game.
