ROUNDUP : Master’s Posts 13th Victory in Row, 92-57

Senior Andy Thompson scored 22 points and freshman Mike Penberthy came off the bench to add 20 as The Master’s College defeated Christian Heritage, 92-57, in a nonconference men’s basketball game Saturday night.

The victory was the 13th in a row for the Mustangs (24-3), their 21st in the last 22 games, and set a school record for victories in a season. Master’s was 23-12 during the 1991-92 season.

The Mustangs made 37 of 64 shots, led by Penberthy’s eight-for-nine effort.

Cal Lutheran 86, Whittier 57--Derrick Clark had 20 points and 11 rebounds for Cal Lutheran in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Whittier.

The victory was the fifth in the row for the Kingsmen (20-1, 9-1), equaling the school record for wins in a season, set last year.

Glendale 79, West L.A. 59--Mike Wright scored 20 points on nine-of-10 shooting to lead the Vaqueros (14-13, 5-3) in a Western State Conference game.

Moorpark 85, Oxnard 74--Sean Martin scored 23 points and Paul Foster had 20 points and 12 rebounds for the Raiders (22-8, 4-3) in a WSC game at Oxnard. Danny Alexander also scored 20 for Moorpark. Wendell Nunnery scored 18 points for Oxnard (12-15, 3-3).

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Canyons 8, Cerritos 1--R.J. Fenolio went four for four with two RBIs as Canyons (2-0) won at Cerritos (4-1). Fenolio had a double in the ninth inning when Canyons broke open a 3-1 game with five runs. Bobby Cowan (1-0) pitched seven innings, allowing one earned run and five hits.

Antelope Valley 10, LACC 5--Eric Cole continued his hot hitting as he went three for four with two triples and three RBIs. The Marauders’ third baseman is eight for nine with a home run, double, four triples and seven RBIs in Antelope Valley’s last two games.

Kings River 8, Glendale 4--Despite Ed Gillis’ three hits, Glendale lost in the semifinals of the Kings River tournament. Gillis, a sophomore second baseman, had two doubles and a single.

The Master’s 4-5, Cal Baptist 1-4--Pitchers Chris Beck and Ryan Dowhouer highlighted Master’s first two victories of the season in an NAIA District 3 doubleheader in Newhall. Beck (1-1) allowed one hit over eight innings in the opener. Dowhouer threw a five-hitter in the second game.

Master’s (2-4, 2-0) won the first game with four runs in the eighth. Tony MacCaughtry homered and went three for four in the second game. Jeff Tomlinson had four hits in the doubleheader.

Cerritos 6, Pierce 2--Justin Wildhorn pitched a complete game, scattering seven hits for Cerritos. He overshadowed Pierce starter Adam West (0-2), who allowed two earned runs and no walks in 6 2/3 innings.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Ventura 58, Compton 54--Julie Hardy scored 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Pirates (23-5, 7-1) to a Western State Conference victory.

Southern Utah 85, Cal State Northridge 52--Cherri Shurtliff scored 22 points for the Thunderbirds in a nonconference game. Michelle Esparza led the Matadors (3-18) with 15 points.

UC San Diego 70, Cal Lutheran 66--The Regals’ bid to rally from a nine-point halftime deficit fell short in a nonconference game at Cal Lutheran. Melissa Wood had 15 points for Cal Lutheran (6-13).

Canyons 87, Bakersfield 55--The Cougars clinched at least a share of the WSC South Division. Rebekah Cunnan scored 35 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Canyons (16-12, 8-0).

Glendale 66, Pierce 54--Susie Woo scored 18 points and Keri Peterson added 16 for the Vaqueros (11-13, 7-7) in a WSC game.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Campbell Hall 67, Pacific Hills 58--Harold Sylvester had 25 points and seven assists and Alex Lopez added 23 points for the Vikings (18-8, 6-4) in a Delphic League finale.

Simi Valley 79, Royal 51--The Pioneers clinched the fourth playoff spot in the Marmonte League in a game that started at 8 a.m. at Thousand Oaks High. Nathan Simmons led the Pioneers (18-8, 9-5) with 18 points.

Santa Paula 44, Moorpark 42--Moorpark’s Mike McKenzie stole the ball from Manuel Escamilla with 15 seconds left, but Escamilla stole it back when McKenzie stopped to set up for the shot.

Escamilla, who had a game-high 21 points, then banked in a six-foot jump shot at the buzzer.

The game was played to determine which Frontier League team would receive the higher seeding in the Southern Section Division IV playoffs. Santa Paula (15-9) and Moorpark (12-12) each finished 4-4 in league play.

HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING

Valley League dual meets--El Camino Real’s Andy Becker (103 pounds), Casey Lee (119), Eduardo Nochez (135), Rick Ullman (152) and Hugo Jordan (160) each went 4-0 to lead the host Conquistadores to a 4-0 record and the league dual-meet title.
