ROUNDUP : A Torrid Half, Then CLU Cruises

The Cal Lutheran men’s basketball team shot 67% from the field in the first half Saturday night on its way to a 95-66 rout of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Cal Lutheran, avenging its first loss of the season.

The Kingsmen (21-2, 10-2) took a 59-24 lead into halftime. Damon Ridley led Cal Lutheran with 25 points. Paul LaMott had 19 and Rupert Sapwell added 10.

Santa Monica 91, Canyons 85--Randy Eason scored a game-high 30 points for Canyons (14-16, 8-2), but the Cougars fell to Santa Monica (20-10, 6-4) in a Western State Conference finale.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Cal State Sacramento 65, Cal State Northridge 56--The Hornets made 21 of 25 free-throw attempts and outscored the Matadors by 18 at the free-throw line in the nonconference game at Northridge.

Kristy Ryan contributed game highs of 24 points and 16 rebounds for Sacramento (13-8). Ryan made 10 of 12 free throws and had eight offensive rebounds. Sarah Stapp added 18 points for the Hornets, making all eight of her free throws.

Shannon Crouse scored 18 points to lead four Northridge players in double figures. Maureen Batiste added 14 points and Kris Waldorf and Katina Mines each had 10 points for the Matadors (3-21).

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Cal Lutheran 8-15, Pomona-Pitzer 1-4--Chris Fick, who hit a pair of home runs Friday, slugged two more, and Scott Sebbo collected six hits, including three doubles, as host Cal Lutheran swept the SCIAC doubleheader.

Fick slammed a three-run homer in the first inning of the second game and finished with five RBIs. Jason Wilson, Ray Arvizu and Sebbo each had three hits for Cal Lutheran (7-1, 6-0).

Mark Weiss (2-0) went the distance in the opener, allowing five hits and striking out five.

The Master’s 10-3, Cal Poly Pomona 7-3--Kenya Hunt went three for four including his second homer of the year, to lead the visiting Mustangs (4-4-1) in the first game. Rod Dowhower (2-1) earned the victory.

Chris Beck gave up three runs on eight hits with nine strikeouts in the second game, which was called after seven innings because of darkness.

JUNIOR COLLEGE BASEBALL

Southwestern 9, Valley 8--Right-fielder David Sanchez had a two-run double with two out in the bottom of the ninth, lifting Southwestern to a comeback victory in a consolation game of the Casey Stengel tournament at Valley. The game was supposed to be played at Fullerton, but was moved to Valley because of wet grounds.

Bakersfield 4, Canyons 2--Bobby Cowan’s eight-inning, eight-strikeout effort was wasted as the Cougars’ bullpen failed to hold a 2-1 lead in the ninth inning of a Stengel tournament second-round game at Long Beach City College.

Chaffey 13, Pierce 6--Lou Tapia, Chris Frith-Smith and Keith Reed were the lone bright spots for the Brahmas (2-4) in a quarterfinal loss at the Mt. SAC tournament.

Tapia tripled and belted his third home run in a two-for-three, three-RBI performance. Frith-Smith allowed one hit in a two-inning relief stint and Reed struck out the side in the ninth inning following Frith-Smith.

WOMEN’S SOFTBALL

Cal State Northridge 5, Cal State Long Beach 0; Cal State Northridge 1, Washington 0--The Matadors (3-1) recorded their third consecutive shutout with two victories in round-robin play of the San Diego State tournament.

Against fifth-ranked Long Beach, CSUN scored two runs in the first and two more in the second in a game called after five innings because of a 1 1/2-hour time limit. Jen Fleming went three for three with two runs scored and Terry Pearson had two hits, including a triple.

Shannon Jones drove in the winning run against Washington in the sixth with a towering shot over the left fielder’s head.

The tiebreaker rule was implemented due to the time limit. Amy Windmiller (2-0), who has not allowed a run in 19 innings, allowed three hits and had eight strikeouts.

JUNIOR COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Antelope Valley 4, Canyons 0--Jody Snelling had four hits and drove in three runs, and Sherry Rogers, Mandy Gutierrez and Donna Villa each collected two hits for Antelope Valley (2-2) in a nonconference game at Canyons.

GIRLS’ SOCCER PLAYOFFS

Buena 3, San Marino 1--Tammy Peck scored two goals to lift the host Bulldogs (19-3-4) in a Division II first-round match. Buena will face La Habra in the second round.

Quartz Hill 5, Aquinas 0--Danielle Reidder scored two goals for the Rebels (17-3-1) in a Division III first-round match. Quartz Hill will play Hart on Tuesday.

Hart 2, Pacific 0--Nancy James scored twice in the second half to advance the host Indians (13-3-4) to the second round of the Division III playoffs.

Moorpark 2, Oak Park 1--Elizabeth Christensen and Amber McKenzie scored to give the host Musketeers a Division IV first-round victory.
