VALLEY-AREA HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Crescenta Valley Stuns Top-Seeded Fontana

Brock Jacobsen scored 33 points and Richard O’Neill added 21 as Crescenta Valley shocked Fontana, 85-77, Tuesday night in a Southern Section Division I-AA quarterfinal boys’ basketball game at Glendale High.
Travon Carmichael scored 26 points for Fontana, the division’s top-seeded team and the No. 4-ranked team in the state by Cal-Hi Sports, but the Steelers (26-2) could not overcome Crescenta Valley’s stellar three-point shooting (12 of 21) and their own poor free-throw shooting (seven of 18).
Jacobsen made eight of 12 shots, including five of seven from three-point range and 12 of 12 from the foul line.
O’Neill was eight of 15 from the field and five of seven from beyond the three-point stripe. He also had six assists.
Michael Crowder added six points, 10 rebounds and six assists for Crescenta Valley (18-9), which finished in fourth place in the Pacific League. The Falcons will face Santa Ana Valley, a 68-64 winner over Ayala, in a semifinal game Friday.
In other boys’ basketball playoff games:
Dominguez 78, Westlake 52--Playing without starting point guard Billy Zaruka (sprained ankle), Westlake saw the Dons badger backup playmaker Steve Aylsworth and force him into several turnovers and 0-for-6 shooting from three-point range. Jason Bedell had 15 points for the Warriors, Aylsworth 13.
Westlake (17-7) led, 17-6, in the Division II-A game before Dominguez (25-2) bore down on defense to outrebound the Warriors, 60-20.
Campbell Hall 76, Chadwick 61--Alex Lopez had 29 points and 15 rebounds and Harold Sylvester added 20 points to lead the Vikings (20-8) in a second-round Division V-AA game.
Campbell Hall, which never trailed, led by as many as 17 points in the first half.
Gahr 52, Agoura 41--The Gladiators eliminated the Chargers in the Division II-AA game at Gahr.
BOYS’ SOCCER PLAYOFFS
Santa Paula 3, Brentwood 0--Sophomore goalkeeper Gabriel Villa made five saves while recording his sixth shutout for Santa Paula (14-5-2) in the Southern Section Division V second-round match. Oscar Crisosto, Rogelio Ramirez and Joseph Jauregui had goals.
Palmdale 2, Alta Loma 1--Mike Dabini scored his 43rd goal of the year and goal keeper Beau Cline had a season-high 11 saves to pace the Falcons (22-1-2) in a Division III second-round match.
Harvard-Westlake 3, Quartz Hill 1--Brian Angelini broke a 1-1 tie in the 55th minute of the Division III second-round match and helped the Wolverines stay unbeaten at 19-0-4.
Moorpark 3, Atascadero 0--Pat Russo, Jamie Surace and Paul Dojo each scored goals for visiting Moorpark in the Division V second-round match.
Moorpark (24-2-1) is 20-0-1 in its last 21 matches.
Calabasas 2, Paraclete 1--Adam Cooper scored 10 minutes into the match on a crossing shot from two yards out and teammate Bhret Haessig beat goalie Jason Godde one-on-one 11 minutes later in the Division V second-round match.
Mater Dei 1, Buena 0--Mike McCabe scored on a free kick at the 29-minute mark and goalie Peter Van de Ver made it stand up for Mater Dei in the Division II second-round match.
Buena goalie Mark Thompson had six saves for the Bulldogs (15-5-3).
Granada Hills 3, Roosevelt 2--The Highlanders (8-4-3) overcame a two-goal deficit in six minutes of the second half of a City Section first-round match.
Angel Gomez scored twice and Martin Felman added a goal.
Grant 1, Palisades 0--Walter Mejia scored a goal--on an assist from Ante Bilaver--10 seconds into the sudden-death overtime period to give Grant the victory in the first-round match.
GIRLS’ SOCCER PLAYOFFS
Hart 2, Quartz Hill 1 (2 OT)--Nancy James scored with one minute left--the 109th of the Southern Section Division III second-round match--on a rebound of a teammate’s shot on the right side.
La Reina 6, Cate 1--The Regals, seeded first and ranked No. 1 in Division IV, got record-setting performances from Michelle Nuesca and Jenny Valle in the second-round match.
Nuesca scored first for La Reina and tied a school record with the 84th goal of her career, equaling the mark set by Jaimie Armstrong (1989-93).
Alicia Bueschen, who scored three times, broke Nuesca’s record for goals by a freshman (17) with her 17th, 18th and 19th goals.
Sami Conroy also scored for La Reina.
Buena 1, La Habra 0)--Jennifer Alderman scored the game’s lone goal eight minutes into the second overtime period to help the Bulldogs (23-4) beat La Habra in a Division II second-round match.
El Camino Real 4, Gardena 1--Courtney Henderson scored two goals to pace the Conquistadores’ City Section first-round victory.
HIGH SCHOOL GOLF
Taft 418, Birmingham 474--Arthur Weiner shot a 78 to lead Taft to victory in the season-opening City 5-A League match at Braemar Country Club.
