BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Strawberry Keeps Hitting Them Out

Share

Darryl Strawberry continues to hit baseballs out of Holman Stadium with regularity during batting practice at Vero Beach, Fla. He began Wednesday’s session with three consecutive home runs that not only cleared the right-field fence but also a row of 40-foot high trees, landing about 400 feet away.

‘I told Darryl that I don’t want to come in every day during the season and ask him how he feels,” Manager Tom Lasorda said. “I told him I am just going to put him in the lineup everyday.”

Strawberry is getting a good reception from fans, who cheered him when the session began.

Dr. Frank Jobe examined Kevin Gross’ right shoulder and said he has a mild case of tendinitis. “I think it will be fine,” Jobe said. Gross continues to throw off the mound every other day, and his condition is improving. “He felt the best he has (Wednesday) after he threw,” said Pat Screnar, team therapist. . . . Former Dodger Mike Sharperson, who was not offered a contract for 1994, agreed to a minor league deal with the club, with a chance to make the team, and is expected in camp today. Sharperson would be available if the Dodgers need an extra infielder. . . . Former UCLA football coach Tommy Prothro, who lives in Memphis, Tenn., visited with Lasorda on Wednesday at Dodgertown while on vacation in Florida. “I called him a while ago and he was very ill, so it was so good to see him feeling well,” Lasorda said.

Darren Dreifort was sharp while pitching batting practice here for the first time.

“Let’s put it this way, facing him on the second day is not the way you want to start spring training,” Eric Karros said. “He’s got a lot of movement on the ball and he’s got a good slider; all he needs to work on is his location.”

Todd Worrell also pitched batting practice for the second time and said he feels good, but may cut back his throwing on the side to feel fresh on the mound. Worrell has been on the mound every other day and on the side in between.

Delino DeShields, socks stretched to his knees, said it hasn’t hit him yet that he’s playing for the Dodgers instead of the Montreal Expos. Tim Wallach, DeShields’ teammate for three years in Montreal, assured him it would all fall in place in a few days.

Wallach, who worked out all winter at Dodger Stadium, looks agile and loose and is hitting the ball well.
