HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER PLAYOFF ROUNDUP : Burroughs Advances, 3-2, on Goal by Perez

Roberto Perez scored the winning goal with 17 minutes remaining in a quarterfinal match of the Southern Section Division III playoffs Thursday as Burroughs upset Palmdale, 3-2, at Burroughs.

Perez, a senior forward who also scored the Indians’ first goal, kicked in the winner on the rebound of a shot by forward Eddie Melgar, vaulting the Indians into the semifinals for the second consecutive season.

Perez has scored five goals in his last two matches. Jesus Diaz also scored for Burroughs (14-6-3) and goalie Marc Binda had six saves.

Mike Dibbini and Craig Peck scored for Palmdale (22-2-2) and Falcon goalie Beau Cline had nine saves.

In other Southern Section quarterfinal matches:

Harvard-Westlake 1, Arcadia 0--Striker David Tuizer scored for the host Wolverines (20-0-4) on a throw-in at the 23-minute mark, and goalkeeper Jay Rosen made six saves while recording his 14th shutout in a Division III match.

Moorpark 1, La Salle 0--Jamie Surace scored on an assist from Jared Kira with a minute to play in the Division V match.

Calabasas 2, Santa Paula 1 (4-3 penalty kicks)--Goalkeeper Mike Freedman recorded seven saves to lead the visiting Coyotes (13-3-4) past the defending Division V champions.

Adan Almaraz scored an unassisted goal for the Cardinals (14-6-2) 17 minutes into the contest, then junior halfback Darren Miller headed in Darren Cooper’s long throw-in five minutes later to deadlock the match.

City Section (second round)

Van Nuys 2, Sylmar 1--Federico Arroyo scored both goals for the Wolves (10-2-2), his 17th and 18th. Jose Cortez had 12 saves for Van Nuys, which has made a striking turnaround from last season, when it struggled to an 1-11 record.

Bell 4, Granada Hills 2--Corey Heimlich and Martin Felman scored for Granada Hills (8-5-3).

Kennedy 2, Grant 0--Golden Cougar midfielder Brett Reveles scored both goals in overtime at Kennedy (14-3), posting one in each of the two extra periods.

GIRLS

City Section (quarterfinals)

Chatsworth 2, Garfield 0--Kim Pickup and Krista Ogasawara scored for top-seeded Chatsworth (15-0-1).

Grant 6, Bell 0--Nicole Bucciarelli recorded a hat trick as Grant (11-3-2) dealt Bell (15-1) its first defeat.

Granada Hills 3, El Camino Real 2 (3-2 penalty kicks)--Darleen Valdivia scored twice in the second half to put the Highlanders (10-3-1) back in the match, then goaltender Danett Epstein stopped three of five penalty kicks in her first-ever shootout to propel Granada Hills to the semifinals. Epstein recorded six saves.

Southern Section (quarterfinals)

Buena 2, Mira Costa 1--Monica Almaraz scored the winning goal with 14 minutes to play in a Division II match at Buena.

The Bulldogs (21-3-4) tied the score two minutes before halftime when Tammy Peck took a pass from Allyson Munday and put a shot past Mira Costa goalie Katie Eviston. Munday also assisted on Almaraz’s goal.

La Serna 3, Hart 0--Lori Harris, Colby Morgan and Kim Keeney scored in the Division III match.

La Reina 2, Marlborough 0--Michelle Nuesca scored both second-half goals in the Division IV match at La Reina (22-2), giving her 86 for her career and breaking the school record of 84 set last season by Jaimie Armstrong.

Peninsula 1, Royal 0--The Highlanders (14-5-4) were shut out in a Division I match at Peninsula.
