COLLEGE ROUNDUP : CSUN Sweeps Long Beach in Softball

Fueled by solid pitching and 22 hits, sixth-ranked Cal State Northridge swept fifth-ranked Long Beach State, 7-1 and 2-1, in a nonconference doubleheader Thursday at Mayfair Park in Lakewood.

Northridge (5-1), which recorded its third victory of the season against the 49ers (3-3), pounded 17 hits--including six for extra bases--in the opener. Kari Hazlett had three hits and Beth Calcante doubled and tripled.

Calcante’s two-run double keyed a five-run second inning. Jennifer Richardson (1-0) pitched a three-hitter with three strikeouts in her first outing of the season.

Amy Windmiller (3-0) threw a three-hitter and had nine strikeouts in the second game. Jen Fleming and Shannon Jones each went two for three.

BASEBALL

Ventura 2, Mt. San Antonio 1--Ventura’s Tim Farris struck out five and walked none in seven innings in the first round of the San Bernardino tournament.

Catcher Robert Fick (two for four) drove in the winning run in the seventh when he tripled home Jamal Nichols with two out.

Ventura thwarted a Mt. SAC threat in the ninth when left-hander Bryant Fick, Robert’s nephew, threw a double-play ball and struck out the last batter.

Glendale 7, Moorpark 6--Glendale took a 4-0 first-inning lead then held on to win the nonconference game. Ed Gillis was four for four for Glendale (2-4). Randy Vickers had a run-scoring single and Steve Mikesell hit a sacrifice fly.

Left-hander John Nall (1-0) scattered eight hits and had one strikeout in seven innings. Brian Warner pitched two hitless innings to earn his first save.

Wayne Northern had a run-scoring double to highlight a three-run fourth for Moorpark (5-3-1). Catcher Kevin Nykoluk was one for two with two walks.

Canyons 6, Harbor 4--Vinnie Orlando (two for four) drove in Brian Powers with a double in the sixth to lift the host Cougars (4-2).

Ted Kiester homered and singled for Canyons and Chris Pfatenhauer added a two-run double.

Antelope Valley 17, Santa Monica 7--The Marauders collected 17 hits in a nonconference game at Lancaster. Jack Cox hit a single, double and triple, and drove in two runs.

Jeff Bowne was three for four and drove in two runs. William Wallace was three for four and drove in three runs. Brandon Yount was two for four, including a run-scoring triple.

Valley 10, East Los Angeles 9--Teddy Gonzalez’ seventh-inning single drove in Marlon Hamilton with the go-ahead run, enabling the Monarchs (2-7-1) to snap a four-game losing streak.

Right fielder Will Skett went three for four, including a three-run homer in the third inning.

Dave Stevenson went three for three with two RBIs) and Jaime Zeichick was three for five with two doubles and two RBIs for Valley. Ryan Messervier earned his first save by retiring the side in order in the ninth inning.
