Female Pitcher Escapes Trouble in 10-1 Victory

Share

Southern California College’s Ila Borders, the first woman to pitch in a college baseball game, got into her first collegiate jam Friday.

Borders, struggling with her control in the third inning of Vanguards’ home game against Concordia, threw three consecutive balls to T.J. Wilcoxson with the bases loaded. Each errant pitch intensified the volume of the razzing from the Concordia dugout.

But after Borders ran the count to 3 and 2, Wilcoxson hit a soft liner up the middle that SCC shortstop Jason Brissey fielded on one hop and threw to first for the out.

Borders got into trouble in several other innings, but was good enough to help the Vanguards to a 10-1 victory in a round-robin game of the SCC tournament.
