OUTLOOK

The Chargers finished fifth in league last season but the returning seven lettermen, including six starters, will help them to be more competitive. “I feel better about this group,” McCaffrey said. “We are more experienced and stronger this year.” Returning starters Fullerton and LeFevers, each second-team all-league selections, are the strengths of the Chargers’ lineup. Fullerton, a third-year starter in the outfield, hit .319 last season. LeFevers, a second-year starter at shortstop, hit .350. In a league dominated by pitchers, McCaffrey’s main concern is his pitching staff. Hendrikx pitched 38 innings last year and went 2-3. Deculis pitched only 12 innings and was 0-2. Saltarelli, who was out most of last season with an ankle injury, is the best athlete on the team and will move to the mound from the outfield. Capacete, a senior who hit .283 last season, will move from third base to second, and sophomore newcomer Smith, a transfer from Oklahoma, will take over at third. Steel, batting .373, converts to catcher from the outfield.
