HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Scheffels Helps Himself in Simi Valley’s 2-1 Win

Bill Scheffels pitched a complete game and drove in both runs as Simi Valley High beat Long Beach Wilson, 2-1, in 10 innings in an El Segundo tournament game Thursday at Simi Valley.

Scheffels (2-0) struck out six and allowed four hits. Wilson tied the score, 1-1, in the fifth when Dennis Kordich hit a home run. In the 10th, Ryan Hankins led off with a triple and Scheffels drove him in with his third hit.

In other El Segundo tournament games:

Burroughs 5, Carson 0--Josh Cartee pitched a complete game and Mike Bassett hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning for Burroughs.

Crespi 7, Alhambra 1--Ron Jones fired a two-hitter, striking out six and not walking a batter, to send host Crespi into the consolation final. Brad Farlow’s two-run single and RBI singles by Jessie Slade and Aaron Sabo keyed Crespi’s seven-run first inning.

Westlake 2, El Segundo 1 (8 innings)--Aaron Tapking drove home Scott Morris in the eighth inning at Moorpark College. Tapking had two hits and both RBIs for Westlake (3-1). Chris Flanigan went the distance for his second victory.

Viewpoint 9, Southwestern 7--Zack Goldstein went two for three and drove in a run to lead visiting Viewpoint (3-1).

Sophomore right-hander Derek Kent (1-0) earned the victory in the darkness-shortened game, allowing only one hit in three innings, with five strikeouts and four walks.

Brea-Olinda 9, Royal 5--Adrian Mendoza and Brent Egan each had two hits for visiting Royal (3-1), but it wasn’t enough. Brothers Joel and Kevin Mellinger hit triples for the Highlanders.

Westside tournament:

Buena 5, Chatsworth 3--The Bulldogs scored four unearned runs with the help of two errors in the sixth inning. Buena (4-0) will face Alemany in the Blue Division final on Saturday. Rick Guzman had a two-run single in the sixth for Buena. Mike Amado was two for four for the Chancellors (2-2).

Hart 12, Harvard-Westlake 4--Louie Sanchez, Mike Espy and Brian Wallace hit home runs for Hart (3-1) in the sixth inning. Sanchez and Wallace hit two-run homers. Jon Schaeffer hit his second home run of the season for Harvard (3-1). Hart will face St. Bernard in the Red Division final on Saturday.

Alemany 7, Oxnard 3--Junior outfielder Robbie Rehfeld hit two solo home runs, including one leading off the bottom of the first, to lead the host Indians (3-1). Junior right-hander Dan Arguello pitched a complete game, striking out six and walking none. Rehfeld and Monred Jensen each had three hits for Alemany.

St. Bernard 10, Camarillo 6--Jake Spahr keyed Camarillo’s offense with two triples and two RBIs. Mike Muller added two hits for the Scorpions (2-2).

Sylmar 8, Crossroads--2 Art Diaz had two hits and two RBIs for Sylmar. Heiram Damwijk added three hits for the Spartans (2-2).

Chaminade 8, Ventura 4--Casey Cote’s two-run double was the only hit in the sixth inning for host Chaminade (3-1), but it broke the consolation semifinal game wide open for the Eagles.

Chaminade had entered the inning trailing 4-2, but scored three runs on four walks and a hit batter prior to Cote’s hit.

Montclair Prep 2, Channel Islands 1--Jared Sandler pitched a two-hitter, striking out 11 and walking four. Sandler also drove in the go-ahead run with a fielder’s choice in the fifth inning. Darrell Dent stole three bases and Scott Stark was two for four for the Mounties (3-1). Channel Islands dropped to 2-2.

Rio Mesa 5, University 4--Charlie Boch and Vince Roman each collected two hits, and Richard Solis struck out nine batters, allowing only three hits in 6 1/3 innings and earning a save for host Rio Mesa in a consolation-bracket game.

Culver City 8, Hueneme 5--Raudell Flores (two for four), Bryan Donahue (two for four, two RBIs) and Robert Ralston (two for four with an RBI) each had two hits for host Hueneme (2-2).

San Fernando tournament:

El Camino Real 4, Thousand Oaks 2--Randy Wolf pitched a three-hitter, striking out 12 for the Conquistadores (3-0) at Thousand Oaks. Wolf was two for two with an RBI. Marvin Jones hit a pinch-hit home run in the seventh inning for El Camino Real. Brian Downing took the loss for Thousand Oaks (1-1).

Franklin 6, San Fernando 4--Gerry Rodriguez went two for three including a double and one RBI for host San Fernando (0-3).

Granada Hills 5, Birmingham 2--(eight innings)--Birmingham’s pitching staff walked 13 and Granada Hills took advantage. Josh Goldberg pitched a complete game for Granada Hills, which improved to 3-0.

Van Nuys 4, Cleveland 2--Andrew Silver pitched 6 2/3 innings and doubled for the visiting Wolves. Miguel Romo and Jose Casco each had two hits for Van Nuys (3-2). Junior Brignac and Tony Williams each had two hits for Cleveland.

Agoura 7, Grant 4--Kevin Sass had a double and four walks for the Chargers. John Dalrymple added two RBIs for Agoura. Josh Weiss hit a two-run home run for Grant (2-2).

Poly 3, Kennedy 2--The Parrots scored the winning run on a throwing error in the eighth inning.

Jaime Cerna drove in the tying run in the sixth for Poly (2-1) with a two-out double.

In other games:

Canoga Park 17, Verdugo Hills 9--The Hunters scored in every inning of the L.A. Invitational game.

Arroyo 3, Crescenta Valley 2--Kirk Hagge hammered a two-run homer for Crescenta Valley in the top of the third, but host Arroyo parlayed four hits and two errors into three runs in the bottom of the inning in a nonleague game.

Faith Baptist 17, Murphy 1--Judd Granzow hit three home runs, was five for five, drove in nine runs, scored five times and struck out 13 batters over 6 1/3 innings in a nonleague game at Faith Baptist.

SOFTBALL

Canyon 15, South Pasadena 0--Crystal Bustos slugged two home runs and drove in four runs for Canyon (3-1) in a semifinal game at the Duarte tournament. Kristin Mills (3-1) pitched five innings of two-hit ball, striking out five.

Harvard-Westlake 13, Marlborough 0--Junior Samantha Bernie hurled her second no-hitter of the week for Harvard-Westlake (3-0) in a nonleague game, striking out seven and walking two. Angie Wong led off a five-run fifth inning with her first home run. Jeri Williams went two for four with four RBIs.

St. Genevieve 9, Campbell Hall 8--A seventh-inning single by St. Genevieve’s Vickie Segoi scored Adilita Pallares with the go-ahead run in a come-from-behind nonleague victory. Pallares was two for two with two RBIs and teammate Christole Gonzalez was two for three.

Calabasas 22, Hueneme 3--Melissa Krolik (1-1) recorded 15 strikeouts and turned in a four-for-five, four-RBI performance for visiting Calabasas (2-1) in the nonleague game.
