They applauded as she maneuvered through a throng of smiling teammates after leaving the game late in the fourth quarter, but still more seemed appropriate.

So when Jamie Oenning finally took her seat after receiving several hugs, high-fives and pats on the back, fans of the Woodbridge High girls’ basketball team stood and kept clapping . . . and clapping . . . and clapping.

The standing ovation lasted several minutes, and that seemed only right after watching the standout senior guard score a team-high 21 points in leading Woodbridge to an 84-63 victory over San Bernardino in the semifinals of the Division II Southern California Regional on Thursday night at Woodbridge.

“This is absolutely a dream,” Oenning said. “My whole career has been like a dream to me.

“I love these fans and I love this school. I couldn’t have written a better ending to my last home game.”

Fortunately for the Warriors’ fans, Oenning still has at least one more game to play.

Woodbridge (31-0), the Southern Section Division II-AA champion, will play Alemany (30-0), the division II-A champion, for the regional title at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Anaheim Arena. Alemany defeated San Diego Mission Bay, 68-51, in the other semifinal.

San Bernardino (26-7) lost to Alemany, 49-46, in the division title game.

This is the first time Woodbridge has advanced to the regional championship game, and Oenning is a big reason the Warriors are making the trip.

Oenning, who also had six steals and four assists, scored 15 of her points in the first half. Oenning’s shooting and passing sparked the Warriors’ 15-2 second-quarter run, which helped Woodbridge lead, 44-30, at halftime.

Sophomore forward Melanie Pearson (20 points, 13 rebounds) increased the lead to 21 points, 51-30, on a pass from Oenning with 6 minutes 30 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Warrior freshman guard Erin Stovall also played well in the quarter, scoring eight of her 16 points.

The Warriors’ lead eventually grew to 23 points, 57-34. San Bernardino, however, would not quit.

Led by their quick, talented backcourt of La Tonya Kindle (23 points) and La Cresha Flannigan (16 points), the Cardinals went on a 10-0 run to cut the lead to 13 points, 57-44.

But the Cardinals would get no closer because they had problems getting the ball .

Woodbridge had a 45-30 advantage in rebounding for the game. The Warriors controlled the game in the fourth quarter and the Cardinals became frustrated.

Celeste Gude, San Bernardino’s powerful 6-feet-6 center, was removed from the game with 2:07 left and Woodbridge leading by 25, 81-56. Gude, who averages 13 points and 13 rebounds, had 10 points and seven rebounds.
