PREP TRACK ROUNDUP : Byrd Breaks Fountain Valley High Jump Record

Fountain Valley’s Matt Byrd broke a 15-year-old school record in the high jump, clearing 6 feet 5 3/4 in a 94-34 victory over Westminster in a Sunset League boys’ track and field meet Thursday.

Rick Bays jumped 6-5 for Fountain Valley in 1979.

Jamal Hills won the 100 in 11.7 seconds and the 200 in 23.7 for Fountain Valley (1-0 in league).

In other Sunset League boys’ track:

Edison 68, Huntington Beach 67--Junior Jason Bader, who finished fourth at the Sunkist Indoor meet last month, won the discus with a throw of 178 feet 2 inches for Edison (1-0).

Marina 75, Ocean View 61--Jeremy Womack won the 400 meters (51.8) and 300 hurdles (41.3) and David Shaw won the long jump (20-3 1/2) and the triple jump (43-4 1/2) for Ocean View (1-1, 0-1).

Servite 72, Santa Ana 64--Carlos Rodriguez won the 100 in 11.5 and the 200 in 24.4 for Santa Ana (0-1, 0-1).

In Garden Grove League boys’ track and field:

Garden Grove 88, Rancho Alamitos 39--Mike Balderas won the 880 in 2:08 and the mile in 4:59 to lead visiting Garden Grove (2-0, 2-0).

Los Amigos 90, Kennedy 38--Sophomore Luis Renteria won the 1,600 (5:09.3) and the 3,200 (11:22) for Los Amigos (1-0).

In Sea View League boys’ track:

Newport Harbor 81, University 46--Wade Tiff won the shotput in 60-10 for Newport Harbor (1-0).

Woodbridge 78, Saddleback 58--Gary Young won the 100 and 200 for Woodbridge (2-0, 1-0).

In nonleague boys’ track and field:

Cypress 64, Buena Park 48, Magnolia 47--Greg Cleave won the 100 yards (10.4) and the 220 (22.9) and Ali Mohammad won the 440 (54.5) and the two mile (10:36) for Cypress (2-0).

El Modena 98, Aliso Niguel 39--Brett Daeley won the 100 in 11.3, the 100 hurdles in 17.5, the long jump at 20 feet and anchored the winning 400-relay team for El Modena (2-0).

Katella 78, Valencia 68, Troy 18--Katella (1-0) won seven of 10 events, including both relays.

Orange 74, Sunny Hills 58--Jaime Martinez won the 1,600 and 3,200 and Jeff Williams won the 100 meter and 300 hurdles for Orange (1-0).

San Clemente 85, Laguna Hills 32--Victor Ruble won the 100 meters in 11.5 seconds and the 200 meter in 24.2 for San Clemente (1-0).

Savanna 81, Loara 46--Mike Flores won the 100 (11.2) and 200 (23.3) and Aaron Woosley also was a double winner, taking the high jump and triple jump for Savanna (2-0).

In Garden Grove League girls’ track:

Garden Grove 88, Rancho Alamitos 37--Erin Nelson won three events to lead Garden Grove (2-0, 2-0). She won the 440 in 68.8, the 880 in 2:43.9, and the 330 hurdles in 52.6. Nicole Murray won the 100 yards (11.8) and 220 (29.4).

Los Amigos 87, Kennedy 42--Carmela Zavala won the 800 and the 1,600 for Los Amigos (1-0).

In Sea View League girls’ track:

Newport Harbor 88, University 38--The Sailors won every event in their league opener.

Woodbridge 74, Saddleback 48--Woodbridge (1-0, 1-0) won all but four events. Wilson Duvall led the Warriors with victories in the 100 (12.7) and 200 (26.4). Gabbey Martinez won the 800, 1,600 and the 3,200 for Saddleback.

In Sunset League girls’ track:

Edison 90, Huntington Beach 37--Kerry O’Bric and Marie Philman combined to win seven events for Edison (2-0, 1-0).

Fountain Valley 98, Westminster 29--Becca Armour won the 1,600 and 3,200 in 5:41.2 and 12:14 for Fountain Valley (1-0). Marlene Lang won the 200 in 27.5 and the 300 hurdles in 47.0. Lisa Tamasui of Westminster won the shotput and the discus with throws of 35-2 and 106-0.

Marina 64, Ocean View 63--Sonya Bryant won the shotput and discus for visiting Marina (2-0, 1-0). Donna Garcia won the 200 (27.5) and 400 (1:02.1), and was part of Ocean View’s winning 400 relay and 1,600 relay teams.

Rosary 76, Santa Ana 46--Lizzie Shilling won the 200 in 29.4 and the 300 hurdles in 54.3 for Rosary (1-0). Linnea Housewright won the high jump at 5-0. Jackie Rodriguez won the 1,600 in 6:03.0 and the 3,200 in 12:58.3 for Santa Ana (0-1, 0-1).

In nonleague girls’ track:

Capistrano Valley 90, Villa Park 37--Meghan Mayes won the 800 and 1,600 races for Capistrano Valley. Villa Park’s Meghan Reppe won the 100 and 200.

Cypress 68, Buena Park 66, Magnolia 25--Carrie Garritson won the mile (5:39.8) and the two mile (13:19) for Buena Park (2-1).

El Modena 84, Aliso Niguel 41--Kaylee Whitfield won the 400 in 1:03.4, the 800 in 2:35.6 and the 300 hurdles in 51.3 for El Modena (2-0).

Foothill 74, Sonora 42, Brea-Olinda 30--Kelly Daucher won the 1,600 (5:34.8) and the 3,200 (12:27) for Brea-Olinda (2-2). Marsha Conrad won the shotput (33-6 3/4) and discus (105-10 1/2) for the Wildcats.

Loara 68, Savanna 59--Pearl Mercer won the 100 and 200 meters and Christina Mantas won the triple jump (31-5) and the discus (96-2) for Loara (1-0).

Los Amigos 85, Kennedy 42--Summer McCloskey won the 200 in 29.5, the long jump in 14-9 and the triple jump in 31-5 1/2 for Kennedy (0-2).

Orange 66, Sunny Hills 58--Delphia Moore won the 200 and 300 hurdles and ran a leg on Orange’s winning 400 relay team.
