Times Sports Named Among Country’s Best
The Times sports section has been named among the country’s top 10 daily sections in the large-paper category by the Associated Press Sports Editors. The Escondido Times-Advocate, among papers with circulation under 50,000, was the only other Southern California sports section given top-10 status. The Times also received honorable mention for its Sunday and special sections. Newspapers are not given specific numerical rankings.
Gene Wojciechowski, who covers national college football and basketball for The Times, was named a finalist in two writing categories, best event story and best news story. Other Times finalists are Mike Downey in columns, Bob Nightengale for event story and the team of Greg Sandoval, Eric Shepard, Karen Chaderjian and John Cherwa for investigative reporting. Writing winners will be announced in April.
