SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

In an attempt to control trash-talking, profanity and violence in high school sports, the Southern Section Executive Committee said Thursday it plans to produce a “Book on Sportsmanship.”

Dean Crowley, the section’s acting commissioner, held up a stack about eight-inches thick of boys’ basketball ejection slips during the section’s general council meeting at the Sequoia Athletic Club. He then held up a considerably smaller stack that included all girls’ sports.

“The purity is still there in girls’ sports,” Crowley said. “The guys want to knock each other on the ground.”

To compile the book, the section will set up a task force, which will include representatives from such groups as athletes, student-body presidents, coaches, boosters, principals and section administrators.

Sportsmanship is addressed in the section’s constitution and by-laws, which direct those involved in high school athletics “to emphasize the proper ideals of sportsmanship, ethical conduct and fair play.” Donn Clickard, representing the Southern Section Executive Committee, said the section wants the words to become reality.

“We are hoping to get it all underway by the end of the school year,” said Clickard, athletic director at Atascadero High. “And hopefully in the future it is something the State Federation will also adopt.”

The council also approved a cost-containment proposal that will require all proposals coming before it to address the financial implications on member schools and the section at large.

In non-action proposals brought before the council:

--Eric Walter, the Liberty League president, proposed that all profits from playoff competition be returned to the section. Presently, profits are split between the participating schools (25% each) and the section (50%). Under Walter’s proposal, all member schools would share monies equally.

--Liza Daniels, principal of Inglewood Morningside High, presented recommendations from the Blue Book committee regarding sportsmanship to be included in the section’s 1994-95 by-laws.

The bench conduct rule would disqualify any player who leaves the bench or team area during a fight from participating in the remainder of the game. Also, he or she would be ineligible for the next game.

The coach ejection rule, which originally called for the game to be forfeited if a coach is ejected, was amended. It now reads that if a coach is ejected, he would be suspended for one game.

These recommendations will be voted upon at the council’s next meeting, April 28.
