Jeremy Fischer of Camarillo High cleared 7 feet 2 inches in the high jump to place second in the National Scholastic Indoor track and field championships at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y., on Sunday.

Eric Bishop of Murray County (Ga.) High won the event with a personal best and meet record of 7-4 1/4.

It was the second year in a row that Fischer has been runner-up in the meet, although his jump was 3 1/4 inches higher than last season.

James Lincoln of Birmingham High, who defeated Fischer in last month’s Sunkist Invitational at the Sports Arena, and Jim Romero of L.A. Baptist did not finish among the top six, clearing 6-6 and 6-2.

“I can’t complain about 7-2,” Fischer said. “I just wish I could have cleared (7-3 on my third attempt). . . . I swear that was like a 7-5 jump. I thought I totally had it.”

Fischer and Bishop each missed their first two attempts at 7-3. After Fischer nicked the bar off with his left heel on his third try, Bishop cleared the bar on his final attempt.

He then made 7-4 1/4 on his second try before missing three times at 7-5 1/4.

Bishop’s performance moves him to third on the all-time national high school indoor performer list, and Fischer is tied for seventh with six others.

Fischer, who set a Ventura County record of 7-3 in an outdoor meet this month, cleared 6-6 and 6-8 on his first attempts and 6-10 on his second.

He made 7-0 on his initial try before clearing 7-2 on his third.
