HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Phillips’ 3-Run Shot Helps Canyon Win

Chad Phillips hit a three-run home run and Eric Schmidt hit three doubles Tuesday, leading Canyon High to a 7-2 nonleague victory over Rio Mesa.

Brent Davidson pitched a complete game, scattering six hits and striking out seven, for the Cowboys (2-3-1).

Rio Mesa’s Chad Snyder was two for three with a home run. Snyder is the brother of Dodger outfielder Cory Snyder, who starred at Canyon in the early 1980s.

In the San Fernando tournament:

Grant 3, San Fernando 2--Adam Frank was three for five, had two runs batted in, and helped Grant tie the score in the eighth and win it in the ninth at Grant.

In the eighth, Marc Scorzia singled to drive home Frank to make it 2-2. With one out and the bases loaded in the the ninth, Frank lined a single to right-center field, scoring Walter Rios to break the tie.

Rios (2-0) pitched the final three innings.

Thousand Oaks 7, Cleveland 2--Matt Elam was three for four with five stolen bases and scored two runs. Elam, a senior shortstop, tied Ryan Kritscher’s single-game school record for stolen bases.

Tim Baron (2-0) went the distance for the victory. Baron has pitched 15 innings this season without allowing an earned run.

Jason Earles and Brandon Highland each doubled for Thousand Oaks (4-2).

Poly 6, Agoura 0--Junior right-hander Hugo De La Torre threw a three-hitter, leading the Parrots (3-1) at Poly.

De La Torre (3-0) struck out nine and walked three. Paul Cespedes led the Poly offense with a two-run single in the fifth inning.

Kennedy 3, Franklin 3--Keith Brydon was two for three with a two-run home run for the Golden Cougars, but the game was called because of darkness after eight innings.

Granada Hills 14, Van Nuys 1--Sophomore John Bolyard pitched four scoreless innings to earn the victory in his first varsity outing.

Jordan Fujimoto and Jimmy Landress each went two for four with three RBIs for the Highlanders (4-0).

In the Sylmar tournament:

Sylmar 9, Taft 7--The Spartans (4-2) scored eight runs on five hits in the first inning, sending 12 batters to the plate.

Taft made four errors and Sylmar leadoff hitter Jose Davila had two hits in the inning. Chris Ruley drove in three runs.

In the L.A. Invitational:

Canoga Park 4, Reseda 4--The Regents left eight runners on base in the final three innings and the game was called because of darkness after 10 innings.

Canoga Park’s Victor Oliveras and Reseda’s Carlos Nunez and Alonso Arreola each hit their second home run of the season.

In the L.A. Baptist tournament:

L.A. Baptist 4, Calvary Chapel 1--Nate Laufer (2-0) struck out 13 and walked five to lead the Knights (4-1) to a first-round victory.

The senior right-hander helped his own cause in the fourth inning, driving in the tying run with a triple and scoring on Jeff Baumsteiger’s squeeze bunt.

Brentwood 14, St. Genevieve 10--Eagle catcher Dave Corleto hit a three-run home run to snap an 8-8 tie in the fifth inning.

The Valiants (1-4) led, 8-3, in the middle of the fourth. Vince Pisano and Chris Ruby had three hits apiece for St. Genevieve. Designated hitter Vince Okamura added a three-run home run.

In a Liberty League game:

Oakwood 10, Queen of Angels 2--Ollie Netburn was three for four with two RBIs, leading the Gorillas (3-0, 2-0) at Queen of Angels.

Dan Morgan yielded only one hit, striking out 10 and walking three. Greg Okun also had three RBIs for Oakwood.

In nonleague games:

Oak Park 14, Marshall 0--Todd Schultz had two hits and two RBIs, and also picked up the victory at Oak Park.

Schultz (1-0) gave up two hits, struck out seven and walked one in the first four innings.

Kevin Pryor was two for two with two RBIs and a run scored for Oak Park (2-1-1).

Village Christian 8, Fillmore 0--Jason Robitaille pitched a two-hitter and struck out seven for Village Christian at Fillmore.

Mike Spielman had three hits and scored three runs for the Crusaders (5-1), and Mike Agnor added two hits, two RBIs and scored a run.

Camarillo 7, Santa Clara 4--Mike Muller’s two-out, two-run single in the fifth and Jake Spahr’s three-run double in the sixth did most of the damage for the Scorpions (3-3).

Aaron Hanel (2-0) allowed three hits and no earned runs in six innings.

Palmdale 4, Saugus 3--Chris Paxton led off the top of the 11th hitting the first pitch over the center-field fence. Charo Boyer also homered for Palmdale.

Saugus (4-3) loaded the bases in the bottom of the 11th but could not score against reliever Brian Welsh, who struck out the last batter.

Faith Baptist 6, Kern Valley 5--Judd Granville was two for two with two RBIs and scored the winning run on a blown squeeze play at Faith Baptist.

With one out in the fifth and Granville on third, Randy Zahr missed an attempted bunt, but Granville managed to beat the catcher’s tag for a steal of home.

Faith Baptist is 2-1.

SOFTBALL

Thousand Oaks 1, Channel Islands 0--Junior right-hander Jessie Davenport had nine strikeouts and perfect game for six innings before giving up a single to start the seventh inning. Davenport (2-1) finished with a two-hitter in the Marmonte League opener.

The Lancers’ run came in the bottom of the second, when Allison Bowman singled, stole second base and scored on an error.

Calabasas 7, Carpinteria 0--Melissa Krolik (2-1) pitched her first no-hitter of the season, striking out 11 and walking four. Keyna Bell had a two-run single in the the Coyotes’ six-run third inning. Calabasas improved (3-1).

Krolik and catcher Jennifer Goodelinus each had two hits.

Marina 4, Saugus 1--Jamie Gillies (8-1) had her first rocky outing for the Centurions (11-1) in the second round of the Laguna Hills tournament. The sophomore pitcher gave up three runs on five hits with three strikeouts and four walks in five innings.

Chris Gill’s sixth-inning single brought home Kim O’Leary with Saugus’ only run.

Royal 2, Westlake 0--Kelly Lovato pitched a one-hitter and struck out eight for Royal in the Marmonte League opener.

Kim Whitehead had two hits and an RBI for the Highlanders (3-2), and Tricia Polhert hit a solo home run in the fifth.

El Camino Real 12, Sylmar 0--Senior right-hander Jennifer Gould pitched a no-hitter, striking out 10 and walking one, for the host Conquistadores (6-2) in a nonleague game. It was the fifth shutout of the season for Gould.

Kennedy 18, Belmont 0--Freshman Sandra Durazo (3-2) recorded 18 strikeouts while throwing her third no-hitter of the season for Kennedy (3-2) in its final tuneup before league play.

A third-inning walk was the only runner allowed by Durazo, who has 56 strikeouts this season.

Hoover 5, Burroughs 1--Sophomore Tina Kinney pitched a five-hitter and had a double and a triple to lead the Tornadoes (3-3) to a nonleague victory. She struck out seven and walked one.

Canyon 2, Highland 0--Kristin Mills pitched a two-hitter and Crystl Bustos had three hits for Canyon in the nonleague game. Mills struck out six and Bustos hit her sixth home run.

Village Christian 29, Pasadena 0--Sophomore Jessie Leivo singled, doubled, tripled twice and drove in eight runs to lead the Crusaders (3-2) in a nonleague game. On the mound, Leivo allowed one hit in four innings.

Crescenta Valley 3, Pasadena Poly 2--Danielle Ferreira struck out 11 for the Falcons (3-0) in a nonleague game.

Oak Park 11, Louisville 2--Kaylene Boldroff (3-0) struck out nine and walked none for the victory and Katie Russell (four for five, three RBIs) and Nicole West (two for four, three RBIs) paced a 15-hit attack.
