They were expected to be good.

No one expected them to be undefeated.

Girls’ basketball--In Wednesday’s edition of The Times Orange County, Dana Hills basketball player Karun Grossman was incorrectly identified as the county leader in three-point baskets. The leader was La Quinta’s Linda Rodriguez, who made 72.

The Woodbridge Warriors were one of only two girls’ teams that finished the regular season without a defeat; three-time defending State champion Brea-Olinda was the other. They played in Orange County’s second-most difficult league and, possibly, had the county’s second-most difficult schedule given their tournament opponents.

They won with one senior, one junior, two sophomores and a freshman in the starting lineup.

The selection was based on Woodbridge’s 25-0 regular-season performance, though the Warriors have made an impressive playoff run; they have since won seven games, including a victory over unbeaten Mission Hills Alemany in the Southern California Regional final. They play for the State championship Friday.

He credits his assistants, Tracy Roberts and William Stovall, and the players, who have melded into a remarkably efficient program.

“One, it’s been easier because of the kids. They’ve done more than they’ve ever done before,” Bangs said. “Two, I’ve had more help than I’ve ever had.

“The kids have taken care of some nitty-gritty things; there haven’t been any internal conflicts and we haven’t had one bad practice. You can get into pure coaching--that’s why you do this. I’ve never had kids respond to what you say as well. For some reason, these kids are really listening intently and carrying things out on the court. It’s little things, but they make a big difference.”

Jessica Eggleston

Cypress; Forward Sr.; 6-0; 29.5 ppg Eggleston led the county in scoring (29.5 points) and shooting (63.4%), helping Cypress (23-3) win the Empire League title. She took what she wanted from about eight feet in and, incredibly, scored 186 points from the free-throw line, shooting 72.1%. Her 11.6 rebounds came in handy, too.

Nicole Erickson

Brea-Olinda; Guard Sr.; 5-6; 15.7 ppg The two-time all-county player of the year is one of the primary reasons the Ladycats never played a game closer than nine points. Erickson, a point guard, averaged 15.7 points and 8.1 assists, shot 47% from the field, 46.9% from the three-point arc and a county-high 80.9% from the free-throw line.

Karun Grossman

Dana Hills; Forward Sr.; 6-0; 23.5 ppg Everything revolved around Grossman, and she came through most of the time, leading Dana Hills (17-7) to the playoffs by averaging 23.5 points and 10.9 rebounds. Her quick release served her well: She made a county-high 62 three-point baskets (37%) and converted 74.3% of her free throws.

Colleen Hudson

Brea-Olinda; Center Sr.; 6-2; 14.0 ppg Hudson provided the strength inside that helped Brea (25-0) ascend to No. 2 in the nation. She averaged 14.0 points and 6.0 rebounds to make the All-County team for the second year. She shot 62.2% from the field and 63.8% from the line. Like everyone at Brea, she is also a terrific defender.

Michelle Macintyre

San Clemente; Guard Sr.; 5-9; 17.4 ppg Macintyre had the capacity to take over a game, and San Clemente (18-5) took advantage of that skill. A second-year first-team selection, she averaged 17.4 points and 4.8 assists and did nothing to shake the confidence of Hawaii, which she committed to attending before the season’s start.

Jamie Oenning

Woodbridge; Guard Sr.; 5-7; 13.5 ppg Oenning was the only senior starter for unbeaten Woodbridge (25-0), and her value came as much from her leadership qualities as it did from her scoring (13.5 points) and playmaking (4.7 assists) skills. She shot 47% from the field, 38.1% from the three-point arc and 77.1% from the free-throw line.

Melody Peterson

Mater Dei; Guard So.; 5-7; 15.1 ppg Perhaps the county’s best pure athlete, Peterson helped Mater Dei (20-3) win the South Coast title. The Monrovia transfer averaged 15.1 points, 4.2 rebounds and 5.2 assists--a figure that could have been greater had teammates been ready for some of her amazing passes, or scored on the ones they caught.

Marie Philman

Edison; Forward So.; 5-10.; 27.0 ppg Philman, one of the county’s strongest players, was also a dominant scorer. She scored 40 or more points on four occasions and had 30 or more 10 times. She averaged 27.0 points on the year and 14.3 rebounds, which ranked her second and third countywide. She shot 53% from the field and 80% from the line.

Shandy Robbins

Marina; Forward Jr.; 5-11; 16.9 ppg The Sunset League is the county’s toughest, and it was Robbins’ defense that secured a share of the league title; her blocked shot in the final seconds saved a victory over co-champion Ocean View. She led Marina with 16.9 points and was equally adept under the boards, averaging 11.6 rebounds.

Akilah Rodgers

Rancho Alamitos; Center Sr.; 6-0; 19.5 ppg A two-time All-County selection, Rodgers could be as devastating as any post player in the county when she wanted to be. She averaged 19.5 points, 15.4 rebounds and 3.7 blocks as Rancho Alamitos shared the Garden Grove League championship. She was dominant inside, shooting 56.4% from the field.
