The high school basketball season officially came to an end for San Gabriel Valley teams as the San Dimas, Bassett and Pasadena Poly boys and the Rio Hondo Prep girls were eliminated from the Southern California regional of the state tournament. Senior guard Jeremy Veal scored 40 points for San Dimas in a 75-73 loss to Santa Margarita in a Division III game.

Senior center Robert Henson scored 21 points for Bassett in the Olympians’ 81-53 Division IV loss to Santa Clara. Cameron Murphy scored 21 points for Pasadena Poly in a 63-56 defeat by Reedley Immanuel in a Division V semifinal.

Rio Hondo Prep was eliminated by La Jolla The Bishop’s, 60-39, in a Division V first-round game. Sarah Zabriskie scored 10 points for Rio Hondo Prep.

The East San Gabriel Valley All-Star basketball games, featuring 48 seniors, will be played Saturday night at Glendora High. The girls’ game begins at 6, the boys’ at 8.

The fourth annual West San Gabriel Valley All-Star games will be played March 25 at La Canada High. Seniors from schools between Glendale and Monrovia will participate. The girls’ game is at 6, the boys’ at 8.

Boys’ and girls’ soccer players are eligible to apply for $1,000 scholarships that will be awarded by the county Department of Recreation and Parks and Ford Motor Co.

Fifteen scholarships will be awarded during the spring. Criteria include diligence and commitment to soccer, financial need, grade-point average, soccer proficiency and community service.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Mt. San Antonio College baseball team entered the week 12-7-1 and 4-2 in the South Coast Conference.

The Mounties, who play Pasadena today, beat Harbor once and Long Beach City College twice last week.

First baseman Artie Daeza is batting .384 with 16 runs batted in for the Mounties. Ralph Cadima, a freshman outfielder, has a 15-game hitting streak and 18 RBIs.

Brett Tomko allowed eight hits and struck out six in 7 1/3 innings, and Danny Ornelas finished up as the Mounties beat Long Beach, 6-0, Saturday.

Mt. San Antonio College will play host to the youth days portion of the annual Mt. SAC Relays on April 8-9.

The youth days, sponsored by the Amateur Athletic Foundation, will involve more than 4,000 children in grades three through nine. The instructional program provides training in track and field and concludes with competition. Participants receive awards, T-shirts and passes to the Mt. SAC Relays.

COLLEGES

The Azusa Pacific men’s basketball team opened play in the 32-team National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics national tournament against Transylvania University (Ky.) on Wednesday night in Tulsa, Okla.

Azusa Pacific received an at-large berth in the tournament after losing to Westmont, 83-79, in the Golden State Athletic Conference championship game.

Azusa Pacific entered the national tournament 28-4 and ranked fourth in the final NAIA regular-season poll.

Azusa Pacific lost in the first round of last year’s tournament, which requires a team to win five games in seven days.

The Cal Poly Pomona women’s basketball team saw its season end March 8 when the Broncos lost to UC Davis, 58-56, in the first round of the NCAA Division II West Regional.

Pomona finished 21-6.

Jennifer Harney scored 14 points for Pomona, which committed 21 turnovers.

The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team continued its hot start in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn., taking two of three games from Cal State Los Angeles to improve to 16-9-1 and 5-1 in conference.

Brian Dennis, Tom Eide and Dave Anderlik all homered and had four runs batted in for Pomona in a 21-0 series-opening victory.

Pomona, ranked 24th in NCAA Division II, plays host to Utah on Saturday.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Brett Tomko, Mt. San Antonio College--Tomko, a 6-foot-4 sophomore, improved his record to 3-0 with a victory over Long Beach in a South Coast Conference game last weekend.

Tomko, who pitched for the Mounties two years ago, gave up eight hits and struck out six in 7 1/3 innings. Danny Ornelas finished to complete the shutout.

MISCELLANY

Track and field meets that will include a variety of age-group competitions will be staged in and around the San Gabriel Valley the next few weeks. The Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation is conducting sign-ups at Carolyn Rosas Park in Rowland Heights and Steinmetz Park in Hacienda Heights for the Arco Jesse Owens track meet April 30. Other meets include:

* The 52nd Pasadena Games, which draws athletes from more than 100 high schools, scheduled for March 26 at Occidental College. Information: (818) 449-1240.

The public is invited to participate in four grass volleyball tournaments that will staged over a four-month period at Azusa Pacific University. Pairs competition in men’s A, men’s B, women’s A and co-ed divisions are scheduled for March 26, April 16, May 7 and June 16. The entry fee is $15 a team in advance, $17 on the day of the tournament.
