Sea Kings Hire Football Coach

Mark Schuster has been named football coach at Corona del Mar High, Athletic Director Jerry Jelnick announced Wednesday.

Schuster, 46, had been the football coach at Azusa High for the last nine years. During his tenure, Azusa reached the Southern Section playoffs six times and compiled a record of 61-33-3.

“We like his high school experience and his college experience,” Jelnick said. “We did not know anything about him going in, but the people we contacted in that area had nothing but good things to say about him. They said he ran a first-class program and did a lot with not much talent.”

Schuster takes over for Dave Holland, who resigned to take the defensive coordinator’s job at Grossmont College. Holland guided the Sea Kings to two Southern Section titles in his 20 years as head coach.

Schuster will continue at Azusa the remainder of year, but will begin an afternoon commute Friday to begin gathering information about his new program. He will teach in the school’s health sciences department.

Schuster lives in Diamond Bar with his three children, Craig, 20, a free safety at Azusa Pacific; Kristen, 19, and Traci, 16, who will attend Corona del Mar.

El Toro’s water polo team, the Southern Section Division I champions, announced that two of its players have signed national letters of intent. Brandon Stout, The Times Orange County player of the year, signed with UCLA, and Brent Stoll, a member of The Times’ all-county second team, signed with George Washington.

Kevin McIntyre, a South Coast League honorable mention pick from El Toro, will play water polo for Army.

Erik Cecil, a 6-foot-4, 240-pound lineman for Whittier Christian, will attend Navy and plans to play football at the academy.

The State Division III girls’ basketball championship game Saturday between Brea-Olinda and San Jose Archbishop Mitty at the Oakland Coliseum Arena will be broadcast live on radio station KMNY-1600 AM, with pregame coverage beginning at 2 p.m. and tip-off at 2:30.
