COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Pierce Hands Orange Coast Its First Men’s Volleyball Loss

Mike Melcher had 22 kills, but the Orange Coast College men’s volleyball team was unable to avoid its first loss of the season, 15-6, 14-16, 15-7, 15-7, to Los Angeles Pierce in an Orange Empire Conference match Friday at Pierce.

Orange Coast dropped to 8-1. Pierce is 9-0.

In nonconference golf:

Orange Coast 394, Rancho Santiago 400, Rio Hondo 416--Eric Barnett shot a two-over 74 and Chris Beck a 78 to lead Orange Coast at California Country Club. Barlow Elton shot 78 for Rancho Santiago.

In Orange Empire Conference softball:

Orange Coast 3, Golden West 0--Kelsi Armbruster drove in two runs and and pitched five scoreless innings to lead Orange Coast to the Orange Empire Conference victory.

Annie Presuttin had the other RBI, scoring Armbruster in the third inning on a double.

Kristen Varagne pitched the final two innings to pick up her second save for Orange Coast (13-8-2, 4-2). Golden West is 4-13, 0-5.

At the Cuesta Invitational men’s swim meet:

Orange Coast leads--Matthias Otte won the 50 freestyle in 21.71 seconds, and Craig McMillan won the 1,650-yard freestyle in 17:02.57 for Orange Coast, which is in first place with 239 points after the first day of competition.
