COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Fullerton Beats San Jose State to Complete Rare Sweep

Cal State Fullerton completed its first sweep of San Jose State since 1987 with a 6-3 victory over the Spartans in a Big West Conference baseball game Sunday at San Jose.

Jeff Ferguson had two doubles and drove in two runs for the Titans.

Bret Hemphill added a pair sacrifice flies for Fullerton (24-5, 3-0 in conference).

Adam Millan also had an RBI double for the Titans, who scored three runs in the fifth inning to take a 5-0 lead.

Mike Parisi (6-1) allowed four hits and no runs in 6 1/3 innings for the victory.

Ted Silva allowed five hits and three earned runs in 2 2/3 innings but got his seventh save.

San Jose State (17-13, 0-3) made three errors leading to three unearned runs for Fullerton.

The Titans beat San Jose State, 7-3, in 10 innings Friday then came back Saturday with an 8-5 victory over the Spartans.

Fullerton plays host to UC Santa Barbara in a Big West Conference doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday. The teams complete the series with a 1 p.m. game Sunday.

In the PONY-Louisville tournament:

Cal State Northridge 1, Cal State Fullerton 0--Amy Windmiller pitched a no-hitter, her fifth in seven games for Northridge (23-4). Tamara Ivie had an RBI single in the first for Northridge. Fullerton is 12-19.

Southwestern Louisiana beat Washington, 2-1, in the title game.

In nonconference softball:

Chapman 3-2, Plymouth State (N.H.) 0-0--Bernie Fancuberta, a freshman from Sunny Hills High School, pitched a four-hitter with 11 strikeouts in the second game for Chapman (22-9) at Hart Park in Orange. She is 11-6. Chapman scored two runs, both on an error, in the fourth.

Katie Chriss (2-0) pitched a five-hitter in the first game and Fancuberta had two hits and drove in two runs and Renee Hernandez had two hits and scored a run for the Panthers.

In nonconference women’s tennis:

UC Irvine 8, Idaho State 1--Jennifer Wall won at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-4, for host Irvine. She leads the Anteaters with a 9-7 record in singles.

Wall and partner Natasha Frantz won at No. 2 doubles, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. The pair have won four in a row and are 7-6 this season.
