PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Big Innings Lift Pacifica to Santa Ana Elks Semifinals

Pacifica scored four runs in the second inning and three in the fifth and held off Santa Ana Valley, 8-6, in a quarterfinal game of the Santa Ana Elks baseball tournament Monday at Santa Ana Valley.

The Mariners (6-6) play Cerritos Gahr in the semifinals at 3 p.m. today at Santa Ana Valley. Chad Brown and Trevor Stivers each tripled and Jeff DePippo and Kasey Chapman had doubles for Pacifica.

In other Elks tournament quarterfinal games:

Cerritos Gahr 8, Villa Park 5--Gahr scored four runs in the first. Matt Brady hit a three-run homer in the fifth for Villa Park (6-5).

George Marshall (Va.) 7, Santa Ana 3--Mike Soule went two for three with two RBIs for Santa Ana (2-8).

In consolation-round games of the Santa Ana Elks tournament:

Trabuco Hills 17, Buena Park 6--Jake Anderson went three for four, including a grand slam in the fourth, a double and seven RBIs for Trabuco Hills (7-4). Teammate Brad Cervantes had three hits, including a three-run homer in the fifth and four RBIs.

Brian Costello went four for five also for the Mustangs. Buena Park is 4-4.

Foothill 5, Valencia 3--Mike Ford went two for three with two RBIs to lead Foothill (6-5). Shortstop Paul King went two for three with one RBI and scored once for the Knights.

Mission Viejo 9, Trabuco Hills JV 6--John Higashi was three for three with a home run and two RBIs for Mission Viejo (3-7).

In the Pride of the Coast tournament:

Brea-Olinda 3, Newport Harbor 2--Senior third baseman Jason Theis doubled twice and scored two runs, including the winning run in the fifth inning on a wild pitch. Brea’s Marc Anspach had two hits and an RBI.

El Modena 17, Estancia 3--Jeremy May pitched his second consecutive complete game, giving up two earned runs and five hits for El Modena (2-7). He had seven strikeouts. Bob Dissmore had two doubles and four RBIs, including a two-run double to highlight an 11-run sixth for El Modena.

Orange 5, Saddleback 4 (9)--Marshall Maresh singled home Eric Mendoza with two outs in the top of the ninth to win it for Orange (7-4). Nick Estrada was five for five with three runs scored for the Panthers.

Corona del Mar 5, Victor Valley 2--J.J. DiCesare hit a two-run homer and Matt Friend pitched 2 2/3 innings of one-hit relief for Corona del Mar (8-2), which plays host to Century at 11 a.m. today in the semifinals.

Century 6, Rancho Alamitos 4--Greg Madrid’s sacrifice fly broke a 4-4 tie in the fifth for Century (7-2).

Hondo Huizar had two hits, scored two runs and had one RBI also for Century.

Santa Margarita 4, Bolsa Grande 1--The Eagles scored four runs and sent nine players to the plate in the first inning. Michael Penney hit a two-run homer for Santa Margarita (3-6). Brent Caldwell had two hits and an RBI for Bolsa Grande (4-5).

Costa Mesa 4, Orange Lutheran 3--Charles Chatman doubled to drive in two in the seventh for Costa Mesa. Eric Estrella was three for three and Mike Adelmund was two for three for Costa Mesa (4-7).

In the quarterfinals of the Anaheim Lions’ tournament:

Dana Hills 6, Cerritos 0--Chris Toomey had two hits and drove in two runs and Brian Ralph had two hits and an RBI for Dana Hills (5-5-1) at Glover Stadium. The Dolphins play Fullerton at 4 p.m. today in one semifinal.

Fullerton 13, Western 3--Ryan Schatz had two hits and three RBIs for Fullerton.

In consolation-round games of the Anaheim Lions’ tournament:

Cypress 10, Sonora 3--Brian Flanagan was four for four with three RBIs and Ray Rios was three for four with three runs scored for Cypress (5-5-1).

La Habra 6, Kennedy 2 (6)--Nathan Shadel’s double in the sixth scored pinch-runner Royce Watanabe with the winning run for La Habra (3-4).

Katella 12, Santiago 2--David Reese pitched a five-hitter, allowing one earned run and striking out eight for Katella (6-6) at Brookhurst Park. Jaret Wright had two triples, three runs scored and three RBIs and Dave Rojo and Jeff Burgueno each had three RBIs. Jae Park and Mike Villegas each had two hits for the Knights.

In the first round of the Upper Deck tournament:

Canyon del Oro (Ariz.) 6, Troy 2--Troy lost its first game of the season.

Jay Gospodarek (5-0) pitched a complete game and Colin Porter went three for four with three RBIs for Canyon del Oro (12-2). Greg Western (2-1) pitched a complete game for Troy (7-1).

In the Durango Las Vegas tournament:

Canyon 10, Las Vegas Valley 2--Gunnar Strunz pitched a six-hitter with six strikeouts for Canyon (7-3). He had two doubles and drove in three runs and teammate Darren Chandler had three hits and drove in two runs.
