Shot in Drug Buy, Dying Man Tells Police

A 26-year-old man was shot and killed late Friday, apparently after a drug deal that went awry, police said Saturday.

The victim, Ernesto Rivera Perez, stumbled out of an apartment in the 1400 block of North Broadway about 10:30 p.m. Friday and collapsed in the street, where he was discovered a short time later by a Santa Ana police officer on patrol. He was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he died during surgery, Faust said.

Before he died, Perez, who was shot in the chest and abdomen, told police he was buying marijuana when he was attacked, said Sgt. Dick Faust.

“He said he was shot by three guys with masks, but that’s doubtful,” Faust said. “A female witness said she saw a male running from the area with a handgun and he wasn’t wearing a mask.”

Police said they have made no arrests and have no suspects in the case.
