PREPS

Jeremy Veal of San Dimas and Cameron Murray of Glendora were selected to the All-Southern Section boys’ basketball team. The team was chosen by the First Interstate Bank Selection Board, which is made up of Southern California prep sportswriters.

Veal, a senior who will play at Arizona State next season, averaged 30 points a game and led the Saints to their third consecutive appearance in the division championship game. He was also selected Division III player of the year.

Murray, a senior who will play at USC next season, averaged 26.3 points a game for Glendora.

Other All-Southern Section selections from the San Gabriel Valley include:

Division I: Shamario Richard of Nogales.

Division II: Murray, Jeron Roberts (Charter Oak), and Duane Curtis (Muir).

Division III: Veal, Eric Sanchez (La Canada), JeCarl Riggins (Blair) and Dante Marks (Pomona).

Division IV: Robert Henson (Bassett) and Emmery Thompson (Bassett).

Because area schools are on spring break, rankings for the area’s top five baseball and softball teams will resume next week.

Top track and field athletes in Southern California, and several from across the nation, will participate Saturday in the Arcadia/Foot Locker Invitational at Arcadia High.

Field events begin at 5 p.m. Running events will start at 6:30.

Muir High’s 1,600 relay team, led by Kenny Haslip, is one of the most powerful in the competition.

Todd Borowski, football coach at Anaheim High the past two seasons, has been named coach at Walnut.

Borowski succeeds Jim Patricio, who resigned after last season.

Borowski, 30, coached Anaheim to a 9-3 record in 1992 and 6-6 record last season.

The inaugural All-CIF inaugural All-Star Shootout, featuring the best senior basketball players in the San Gabriel Valley, will be played Friday night at Glendora High. The girls’ game begins at 6, boys’ game starts at 8.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

Shontel Patterson of the Mt. San Antonio College women’s basketball team was selected to the All-South Coast Conference first team by league coaches.

Patterson, a 5-foot-6 sophomore who graduated from Ganesha High, averaged 14.6 points and 7.4 rebounds last season.

The Mt. SAC Foundation will sponsor a golf tournament April 25 at Sierra La Verne Country Club in La Verne.

The tournament is a men’s and women’s scramble with awards for the top teams, a putting contest and banquet. The cost is $150. Information: (909) 594-5611, Ext. 4215.

COLLEGES

Azusa Pacific University will induct nine people into the school’s sports Hall of Fame on Saturday.

Inductees include Chris Barbone, a standout baseball player who graduated in 1978, Liz Garman (track and field, 1982), Dean Karnoski (football, 1976), Dennis Vanzant (basketball, 1974), John Baugus (soccer, 1983), Gerry Nelson (baseball, 1962), Nancy Culver (basketball, 1978), Becky Goodman (volleyball, 1982) and Elaine Baugus, who has been school’s athletic secretary since 1980.

Azusa Pacific will play host to the Golden State Athletic Conference track and field championships Saturday.

Azusa Pacific men’s teams have won seven consecutive GSAC championship meets. Defending discus champion David Pope and triple jump champion Ben Beal lead the Cougars.

Returning women’s champions from Azusa Pacific include Michelle Campbell (100- and 200-meter hurdles), Nicole DeVries (800), Carmen Gage (triple jump) and Debbie Malachowski (shotput, javelin and discus).

DeVon Edwards of Cal Poly Pomona set a meet record at the Riverside Invitational with a time of 46.29 seconds in the 400-meter dash.

Edwards, a junior, eclipsed the mark of 46.65. He has already met the NCAA’s qualifying automatic standard.

The Cal Poly Pomona’s baseball team, ranked 24th in NCAA Division II, entered the week 21-13-1, 6-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn.

The Broncos travel to Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday and play host to the Toros twice Saturday in a three-game CCAA series.

Last week, Pomona lost two of three CCAA games against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Pomona, San Luis Obispo and Dominguez Hills are tied for first place in the CCAA.

Pomona senior designated hitter Dave Anderlik is batting .424. Junior outfielder Aaron Edwards is batting .388 with 29 stolen bases.

Azusa Pacific’s baseball team, ranked 13th in National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics, plays host to Southern California College this weekend in a Golden State Athletic Conference series.

Azusa Pacific entered the week 21-10, 5-3 in the GSAC. The Cougars trail conference leader Cal Baptist by a half-game.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Dan Tyman, Arcadia--Tyman, a senior right-hander, pitched a no-hitter against Pasadena to help the Apaches stay unbeaten in the Pacific League.

Tyman struck out 10 and walked one.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Fatima Yusef, Azusa Pacific-- Yusef, of Nigeria, won the women’s 200 meters with a meet-record time of 23.58 seconds at the Riverside Invitational.

She also anchored the 400 relay (48.36 seconds) and 1,600 relay (3:46.42) teams that posted qualifying times for the NAIA outdoor championships.

MISCELLANY

The public is invited to participate in three grass volleyball tournaments that will staged at Azusa Pacific University. Pairs competition in men’s A, men’s B, women’s A and co-ed divisions will are scheduled for April 16, May 7 and June 16. The entry fee is $15 a team in advance, $17 on the day of the tournament.
