WATERSHED PLAN: All of that bamboo-like arundo will come out. And state workers will pull any other weeds as part of an ambitious effort to restore the Ventura River estuary (B1) . . . . The California Coastal Conservancy may put up $400,000 for the project that will create a Seaside Wilderness Park, including a wooden trail over the sand dunes, a visitor center and amphitheater. Said Friends of the Ventura River’s Mark Capelli: “It will be a major attraction for both visitors and residents.”

RISKY BUSINESS: Professional beekeepers are becoming a rare species in Ventura County as a glut of imported honey makes commercial hives a sticky venture (B1). . . . And now beekeepers are worried about the arrival of aggressive, Africanized bees. The “killer bees” are just over the border in Arizona and expected to enter California during this spring’s swarming season.

ONE GOOD TURN: Given $350 to help them replace classroom equipment broken in January’s earthquake, a group of Simi Valley schoolchildren has decided to pass on the good will to Alabama tornado victims. Kids at Atherwood Elementary School raised about $150 for the Methodist Church that was flattened by a twister last month.
