Tennis / Singles
O’Neill started slowly in his set against Canyon’s No. 1 player Paul Espinoza Thursday. O’Neill trailed love-40 before Espinoza broke him in the first game. But he stayed in the set, broke Espinoza at 5-6 and went on to win the tiebreaker, 8-6. It was O’Neill’s only tough set of the day; he won the other two, 6-3, 6-1, helping the Panthers to a 10 2/3-10 1/3 victory over Canyon, then ranked ninth in the county. Led by O’Neill, who is 27-0 this season, Orange is challenging the Century League’s traditional tennis powers, Canyon, Villa Park and Foothill.
Other notables:
* Mike Frith, San Clemente, batted .636 with two homers and 10 RBIs as the Tritons won the Carlsbad tournament.
* Corey Johnson, Los Alamitos, cleared a county-high 6-8 1/2 in the high jump in a 92-40 victory over Loara.
* Sean Morrison, El Dorado, had 30 kills in a five-game victory over Valencia.
