Jennifer Slaney provided the angst and the RBI.

Slaney, a junior transfer from Downey High who is batting .121, sliced a single down the right-field line in the fourth inning to score the run that gave second-ranked Los Alamitos a 1-0 victory over No. 1 Cypress on Tuesday.

It was one of Slaney’s two hits off freshman Stacy Silva (8-2), who pitched a four-hitter but had little offensive support.

The Centurions (9-3) had their chances, though, beginning with Slaney’s two-base error in right field to open the game. That caused some anxiety for her teammates, including winning pitcher Debbie Wilson (9-1), whose double preceded Slaney’s RBI single.

After Kim Lumsdaine was called out for stepping on the plate while trying to sacrifice Christa Saindon to third and pitching around Julie Adams, Cypress looked as if it was in business. But Wilson, who gave up only two hits, struck out the fourth and fifth batters.
