COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Antelope Valley Softball Team Pulls Even With Chaffey

Heather Meyer pitched Antelope Valley College into a first-place tie with Foothill Conference rival Chaffey by pitching a one-hitter, leading the Marauders to a 2-1 softball victory over the Panthers on Friday at Lancaster.

Meyer (14-4) had a no-hitter through 6 2/3 innings and struck out 13. The sophomore from Quartz Hill High also doubled and scored what proved to be the winning run in the fourth inning.

Yvette Allen had an RBI single in the third inning for the Marauders (29-7, 7-1 in conference play).

Canyons 3-5, Pierce 0-3--Mary Ann Winchester picked up a victory and a save in the same afternoon as Canyons swept Pierce in a Western State Conference doubleheader at Valencia.

Winchester pitched a complete game, striking out five, and Kim Guerrero added three hits for Canyons in the first game. Winchester, who had three victories this week, picked up her first save of the season when she halted a Pierce rally in the seventh inning of the second game.

BASEBALL

Victor Valley 4, Antelope Valley 2--Angelo Sakelarious, Frankie Maldonado, Derek Forman and J.P. Hamilton each had two hits for the Rams (10-10, 5-9) in a Foothill Conference game. Jack Cox was two for three and scored a run for Antelope Valley (11-12, 5-9).
