HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Lincoln Sets a Hot Pace as Birmingham Speeds to 55

James Lincoln won three events and several of his teammates posted high-quality marks as host Birmingham High defeated Canoga Park, 116-11, in a Valley Pac-8 Conference meet Friday.

The win was the 55th in a row for the Braves (5-0, 5-0 in the league) in dual-meet competition.

Lincoln won the 110-meter high hurdles in a personal best of 14.9 seconds, the high jump at 6 feet 9 inches and the long jump at 21-0, but finished third in the triple jump as two of his teammates surpassed his effort of 43-8 1/2.

Jamal Marks, a junior who is competing in track for the first time, improved his personal best by 5 1/2 feet to win the triple jump at 45-5 1/2. He he placed second in the high jump at 6-3.

Monroe 81, Van Nuys 36--Kenny Hopson won the 100 meters in 10.9, the 220 yard-dash in 22.7 and ran the second leg on host Monroe’s victorious 400 relay team (44.1) in the Valley Pac-8 Conference meet.

Jose Padilla added victories in the 880 (2 minutes 5.1 seconds) and two-mile (10.13.2) for the Vikings (5-0, 5-0).

GIRLS’ TRACK

Cleveland 64, Kennedy 53--Neisha Henderson won three events to lead Cleveland in the Northwest Valley Conference meet at Kennedy.

Henderson timed 12.8 in the 100 and spanned 16-0 in the long jump and 35-2 1/2 in the triple jump for the Cavaliers (4-1, 4-1).

BASEBALL

Hoover 6, Glendale 3--Tornado pitcher Jose Nuno (1-1) earned the complete-game victory in a Pacific League game at Glendale (6-9, 2-5 in league play). Chris Butler went two for four and scored two runs for Hoover (7-6, 5-2).

Crescenta Valley 5, Arcadia 0--Kasey Canale went three for four and had three RBIs to lead the Falcons (10-3, 7-0) in a Pacific League game against Arcadia (12-3, 5-2).

Garret Lee (2-2) allowed four hits and one in six innings.

Quartz Hill 12, Highland 7--Darrell Hussman and Jonathan Smith each had three hits for host Quartz Hill in the Golden League game.

Kyle Goss was two for four with two runs scored and two RBIs for the Rebels (9-7, 4-3).

Palmdale 5, Burroughs 3--Tim Guzman led off the seventh for the Falcons (12-4, 5-2) with his first home run of the season, breaking a 3-3 tie. One out later, Brian Welsh added an insurance run with his first home run. Guzman finished two for three with two runs.

Palmdale starter David Glick went the distance, striking out 13 while allowing only two hits.

Agoura 14, Bishop Diego 8--Charles Brown went four for four with three RBIs to lead the Chargers (5-10) past Bishop Diego (6-8) in a Santa Barbara tournament game.

The Chargers scored six runs in the first inning, but Bishop Diego responded with six runs in the second on two hits and four walks.

Antelope Valley 7, Littlerock 4--Senior right-hander Justin Graves (1-2) pitched Antelope Valley’s first complete game in 42 outings to lead the Antelopes (6-7, 5-2) to a Golden League win.

Chris Tapia went two for three with two doubles and two runs and teammate Marcus Armstrong was two for four with four RBIs.

Santa Paula 10, Nordhoff 1-Hector Torres had two hits and two RBIs for Santa Paula in the Frontier League victory. Raul Santa Rosa pitched a complete game, striking out seven and improving his record to 2-1. Paz Olsen-Pacheco also added two hits for the Cardinals.

Crespi 13, Loyola 7--Mike Glendenning drove in three runs with three hits to lead Crespi in a Mission league game at Valley College. Four players had three hits for Crespi, which racked up 18 hits. Barry Matthews, Brad Farlow and Chris Crawley also added three hits for the Celts (12-5,4-2).

St. Paul 7, St. Francis 2--St. Paul scored five unearned runs in the second inning against the Golden Knights (9-7, 2-3) in a Del Rey League game.

L.A. Baptist 18, Western Christian 3--Greg Wells threw a four-hitter and struck out seven to pace the Knights’ third Alpha League victory of the week.

Wells (2-0), a senior left handder, walked three and allowed two earned runs.

Dana Berg went four for five to lead the Knights (10-5, 3-1). Zack Hernandez had three hits and three RBIs and Jeff Baumsteiger was two for two and scored two runs.

Maranatha 9, Village Christian 3--Mike Gallegos had two doubles and one RBI in the Crusaders’ Alpha league loss. Mike Spielman extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a single in the sixth inning.

Oak Park 4, St. Bonaventure 2--Eric Ruhle and Brian McMullen each had two hits to lead the Eagles (8-3-1, 3-2) to a Tri-Valley League victory.

Avalon 2, Oakwood 0--Daniel Rodriguez’s squeeze with one out in the fourth scored Cornelio Higuera with the go-ahead run for Avalon (4-3, 0-2) in a Liberty League game. Avalon’s John Eric Hernandez (3-1) pitched a three-hitter, striking out nine and walking one.

Buckley 15, Queen of Angels 7--Griffin senior Mitch Brim hit a grand slam and also pitched four scoreless innings in relief to earn the victory in a Liberty League game at Queen of Angels.

Brim went two for five and had seven RBI for Buckley (7-4, 3-0). On the mound, Brim (3-2) did not allow a hit and struck out eight.

L.A. Lutheran 17, Windward 0--Greg Norlie went three for three and drove in seven runs for the Lions in a nonleague game at Windward called after six innings because of darkness.

Teammate Rick Lehr went three for three, scored runs and had three RBI for L.A. Lutheran (8-3). Brian Bishop (3-1) struck out nine in four innings to earn the victory.

Westlake 9, Santa Clara 5--Dave Bartlestone had three hits and four RBIs as Westlake won a consolation game of the Camarillo tournament. Brian Schuster also added three hits and had two doubles for Westlake (10-6).

The Warriors Westlake will play in the consolation championship against Ventura today at 9 a.m.

St. Monica 8, St. Genevieve 2--Carlos Casillas capped a four-run first inning with a three-run home run to lead St. Monica (2-0 in league play) to a Camino Real League victory. Casillas’ blast followed three errors by St. Genevieve (7-10, 0-2).

SOFTBALL

Alemany 7, Harvard-Westlake 0--Sophie Contreras threw a three-hitter and struck out six for the Indians (12-2, 5-0) in a Mission League game.

Sonja Maldonado, Esmeralda Macias and Angela Rivera each had two hits.

Maranatha 6, Village Christian 2--Hillary Harter went three for three with a run and an RBI to lead host Maranatha (2-3 in league play) to an Alpha League victory. Heather George added two hits and an RBI.

Jessie Vivo went three for three with an RBI for Village Christian (1-2 in league play).

Vivo, the starting pitcher, took the loss despite striking out nine.

Oakwood 6, Avalon 0--Sophomore Susie Vatz pitched a no-hitter for Gorillas in a Liberty League game at Avalon.

Vatz (6-1) struck out nine and walked only one in her first career no-hitter.

She also doubled and scored for Oakwood (6-1, 2-0).

L.A. Lutheran 26, Providence 5--Rian Standley went five for five and had four RBIs as L.A. Lutheran routed visiting Providence.

Standley, a freshman catcher, hit two doubles and a home run for the Lions (8-3).
