SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The accolades keep coming for Michael Granville. The Bell Gardens High sophomore has been named the Indoor Athlete of the Year by Track & Field News magazine.

In February, Granville set a sophomore record of 57.7 seconds in the 500 yards in the Sunkist Invitational. Last month, he ran 1:51.11 in the 800 meters in the National Scholastic Indoor championships in Syracuse, N.Y., to cut 3.17 seconds off the sophomore record move into third on the all-time high school list.

Granville hasn’t lost a step outdoors, either.

A week after winning the 800 in the Arcadia Invitational for the second time in a row, Granville clocked a personal-best 46.65 seconds to win the 400 meters at the April 15 Mt. San Antonio College Relays. The mark was the meet’s fastest time in more than 15 years.

Granville, who ran 47.24 in the 400 last year to establish a State freshman record, also finished third in the 200 meters in 21.75. Jim McElroy of Washington was fourth in 21.90.

Sophomore Clarence Scott of Fremont recorded the City’s top mark this season in the long jump, leaping 23 feet to finish third.

City cross-country champion Ricardo Valenzuela anchored Belmont to third in the 6,400-meter relay (18:09.04) and fifth in the distance medley relay (10:44.27).

Keisha Griffis of Washington was fourth in the 300-meter hurdles (46.18) and third in her heat of the 100 hurdles in 15.37. Jason Barreda of Loyola was fifth in the 3,000 meters in 8:49.69.

The Cal State Los Angeles men recorded the fifth-fastest times in school history in the 400- and 1,600-meter relays in the University/Open Division of the April 17 Mt. SAC Relays.

Ruben Benitez, John Hensley, Glenn Stewart and Keadrick Washington timed 3:09.91 in the 1,600-meter relay to pace the Golden Eagles to their first victory in the event in the meet’s 37-year history.
