COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : OCC Men, Women Lead Swim Meet After First Day

The Orange Coast men’s swimming team set individual and relay records at the Orange Empire Conference finals Thursday at Saddleback.

The Pirates’ Matt Otte won the 200 individual medley in a record 1 minute 54.29 seconds. Otte also was on the 200 freestyle relay team that set a conference mark of 1:25.42. Chris Crilly, Rich Ruffini and Bryce Rittgers were the other members of the team.

After the first of three days, Orange Coast is well ahead with 283 points. Palomar (206) is second and Saddleback (136) is third.

In the Orange Empire Conference women’s swimming finals:

Orange Coast leads--Erin Snow, Michelle Pagan, Shanon Clairmont and Brandy Wright teamed to win the 400 medley relay in 4:15.31 for OCC, which has 254 points. Saddleback has 173.

Heather Burton of Rancho Santiago won the 500 freestyle in 5:19.03.

In the South Coast Conference men’s swimming finals:

Golden West leads--Matt Braun of Golden West won the 500 freestyle in 4:40.05 and teammate Javier Casasnovas won 50 freestyle (21.64) at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach. The Rustlers (235.5) have a slight lead over Long Beach (231.5) after the first of three days.

In the South Coast Conference women’s swimming finals:

Golden West leads--The Rustlers took first in the 200 freestyle and lead the team competition with 239 points. Mt. San Antonio (139) is second. Roxanne Sota of Fullerton won the 500 freestyle (4:57.70) and teammate Andrea Reade won the 100 individual medley (1:03.82).

In Orange Empire Conference baseball:

Cypress 8, Fullerton 6--Dave Trentine had an RBI single and Eric Stevens’ squeeze bunt scored another run as visiting Cypress (30-10, 15-5) scored twice in the ninth to break a 6-6 tie. Aaron France (9-3) gave up six runs in the fourth inning, but pitched a five-hitter for the victory.

Hodges had two hits, including his 10th home run. He had hit three home runs in the last two games. Cypress holds a one-game lead over Riverside and a two-game lead over Rancho Santiago with four left.

Rancho Santiago 13, Golden West 0--Matt Kastelic (four RBIs) and Jason Minici hit home runs for Rancho Santiago (30-9, 13-7). Kastelic also had a double for the Dons, who scored eight runs in the ninth inning.

Saddleback 7, Orange Coast 3--Wade Jackson and Ted Wilkes each had three hits, including two doubles, for host Saddleback (22-12-1, 12-9).

In Orange Empire Conference softball:

Saddleback 1, Fullerton 0--Lucy Jacobs scored on a single by Cheri Davis in the fourth inning for Saddleback. Saddleback is 21-17, 9-10 and Fullerton is 24-17, 12-7.
