COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Orange Coast’s Otte, Emmons Set Records at Swim Meet

Matt Otte and Jim Emmons of Orange Coast College set individual swim records at the Orange Empire Conference finals Friday at Saddleback.

Sophomore Otte won the 100 backstroke in a record 52.06 seconds. He narrowly missed setting a record in winning the 100 butterfly (50.66). Sophomore Emmons won the 100 breaststroke in a record 58.07.

After two of three days, first-place Orange Coast increased its lead with 626 points. Palomar is second (457) and Saddleback is third (319).

At the Orange Empire Conference women’s swim finals:

Orange Coast leads--Tami Parker and Shanon Clairmont of OCC each won one individual event.

Parker won the 50 breaststroke in 32.98. Clairmont won the 50 butterfly in 27.66.

Orange Coast leads the team standings with 567 points, followed by Saddleback (299) and Riverside (268).

In Orange Empire Conference softball:

Orange Coast 3, Golden West 0--Kristen Varagne struck out eight and went the distance for Orange Coast (29-12-2).

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third inning, when Pirate Tracey Colombo singled home Kim Kallemeyn with two outs. Orange Coast’s second run came after Annie Presutti singled in Stefanie Ritchey and America Robledo knocked in Tami Dowlin for the game’s third run.

It was the Pirates’ 13th consecutive victory over Golden West since 1991.

With only one game left in conference play, Golden West leads Cypress by one game. The Pirates will meet Riverside tonight.

Orange Coast is 29-12-2, 16-4; Golden West dropped to 10-25, 5-15.

Rancho Santiago 4, Fullerton 0--Renee Taylor’s three-run home run highlighted a four-run fourth inning for Rancho Santiago (25-17, 13-7).

Saddleback 9, Irvine Valley 3--Vicki Sukiasian had two hits for visiting Saddleback (22-17, 10-10).
