PREP ROUNDUP : Garden Grove Beats La Mirada for Softball Tournament Title

Lorrie Duran had an RBI single, and Duffy White drove in Wendi Griffin with the go-ahead run in the third inning as Garden Grove won the championship of the Garden Grove softball tournament Saturday with a 5-1 victory over La Mirada.

The Argonauts’ Kathy Moore (4-4) struck out four and gave up one earned run and three hits. Catcher Jennifer Johnson was named tournament MVP, and Moore, Griffin and White were named to the all-tournament team for Garden Grove (13-11).

In a consolation game:

Cerritos Gahr 2, Calvary Chapel 0--Jennifer Melone (3-6) gave up two runs on four hits and had two hits for visiting Calvary Chapel (6-15).

In Century League baseball:

El Modena 2, Canyon 1--Brett Bandel and Jeremy May combined to give up one run on four hits, leading El Modena (4-13, 1-10) to its first league victory. Scott Emery had a double, a home run and two RBIs for El Modena, which avenged a 17-2 loss Friday to Canyon (16-5, 9-2).

In the Empire League:

El Dorado 2, Esperanza 1 (8)--Chris Beck singled home Spencer Frost with the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth for host El Dorado (16-6, 8-3).

Trailing, 1-0, in the bottom of the eighth, Mike Castillo hit a two-out double and scored on a double by Frost. Benny Flores gave up one earned run and four hits to improve to 5-4.

In the Sea View League:

Tustin 3, Irvine 1--Rick Gonzalez was two for four with a home run and Justin Lloyd was two for four with an RBI for Tustin (17-5, 9-1). Brian Helsper won his sixth game without a loss for the Tillers. Irvine drops to 10-12 and 3-6 in league.

In the Sunset League:

Servite 4, Huntington Beach 1--Ross Miedecke and Brian Greene combined to give up one run on two hits for visiting Servite (12-8-1, 6-4).
