The one thing Canyon’s baseball team doesn’t need is help.

But the Comanches, who average more than eight runs a game, took what was given to them Tuesday in an 11-1 victory over Villa Park at Canyon. The victory wrapped up the Century League title for Canyon (19-5, 12-2) and the Spartans all but handed it over.

Villa Park pitchers walked 10 batters, including six in the sixth inning. That sort of generosity did not go unpunished. Canyon, which hits .382 as a team, scored eight runs in the sixth.

Five of the Comanches’ eight hits were doubles.

“That’s their team,” Villa Park Coach Scott Wilson said. “They put pressure on you and wait for mistakes.”

Gunnar Strunz doubled twice in the sixth, knocking in two runs. Darren Chandler had a RBI single. Three Spartan pitchers walked in four runs.

Matt Brady (6-3), one of the top pitchers in the league, walked six batters and gave up seven hits before leaving with one out in the sixth.

“Walking that many batters is dangerous against us,” winning pitcher Greg Jacobs said. “We have a lot guys who can hit the ball.”

Jacobs is one. He had an RBI single and also walked twice to force in runs. Casey Wilson and Josh Gutierrez each had two RBIs, one each on walks.

Jacobs (6-0) also pitched five shutout innings, allowing only three hits. The Spartans (15-9, 9-5) had chances against Jacobs early but stranded 10.
