SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Surprising even himself, El Toro’s Tyce Routson won the Division I boys’ diving championship Wednesday at Heritage Park, setting a Southern Section record with a score of 604.95.

“I didn’t think I would do that well overall,” Routson said. “I started off slow, but then I picked it up.”

Routson, who will attend Miami on scholarship in the fall, got into his rhythm in the fifth round, when he executed an inward 2 1/2 somersault pike that drew marks of 7.5 to 8.5. On his next six dives, he averaged scores of 7.6, including a forward 1 1/2 somersault pike that drew two 9.0s.
