Phil Abraham, girls’ varsity basketball coach at Edison High, announced Thursday that he was resigning to continue his education, girls’ Athletic Director Bruce Belcher said.

Abraham will be replaced by Dave White, who was the girls’ varsity coach for eight seasons before taking over the Chargers’ football team in 1986. White led Edison’s girls to the Southern Section 4-A title in 1987.

White said he will rely heavily on assistant coaches Michelle Hennessey and Alonda Varisco. Hennessey played for White’s championship team in 1987. Varisco was a standout player at Mater Dei and UC Riverside.

“There is going to be some overlap (of seasons), how much depends on how far we go in the football playoffs,” said White, who also coaches the girls’ distance runners on the track team.

Abraham had an 81-50 record in five years as a walk-on coach. The Chargers finished 17-9 last season, losing in the first round of the section I-A playoffs.
