HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Two Hoover Pitchers Team for Perfection

Hoover High pitchers Tina Kinney and Karla De La Torre combined on a perfect game Thursday as the Tornadoes routed Muir, 20-0, in a Pacific League softball game at Hoover.

Kinney (14-10) retired the first 15 batters before being replaced by De La Torre in the sixth inning. De La Torre mowed down the final six Mustangs.

Emily Carlson’s four-for-five performance paced the Tornadoes’ 21-hit attack. Tracy Binder was two for two with two RBIs and Norma Solis was three for three with two RBIs.

Simi Valley 1, Royal 0--Sara Griffin scored the game’s only run in the first inning on a fielder’s choice and the Pioneers (23-1, 12-1) held on to beat Royal (13-10, 7-7) in a Marmonte League game at Simi Valley.

Griffin (19-1) threw a three-hitter and struck out seven.

Oak Park 5, Bishop Diego 0--Kaylene Boldroff (12-3) won her sixth game in seventh outings and struck out five for the Eagles (15-6, 8-2) in a Tri-Valley League game at home.

Jill Cassidy drove in a run with a second-inning triple and scored on a single by Jennifer Malter for a 3-0 Oak Park advantage.

Canyon 6, Burroughs 3--Crystl Bustos had two hits and scored three runs for Canyon (15-5-1, 7-3-1) in a Foothill League game at home. Bustos also stole two bases, including home plate in the third inning that gave Canyon a 3-2 lead. Cassi Lemasters also drove in two runs on a fifth-inning triple for the Cowboys.

Santa Clara 8, Santa Paula 2--Necie Madrigal and Harmony Crutcher went three for four to lead the Saints’ 13-hit attack in a Frontier League game at Santa Clara.

Madrigal’s two-run homer keyed a five-run fourth inning for Santa Clara (9-10, 5-6).

L.A. Baptist 4, Village Christian 3--Pitcher Megan Peterson singled in the decisive run during a two-run sixth inning for L.A. Baptist (7-9, 6-5) in the Alpha League game. Amanda Sattler was three for four and drove in a run for the Knights.

La Reina 2, St. Bonaventure 1--Jennifer La Femina scored the winning run on Michelle Nuesca’s squeeze bunt in the fifth inning, enabling visiting La Reina (14-9, 9-1) to clinch its fifth consecutive Tri-Valley League title.

Sarah Heiler was two for four for the Regents, who have finished first in league play six of the last seven years.

Montclair Prep 12, Oakwood 3--The Mounties (16-3) finished with their best record ever by winning their final regular-season game as seniors Cory Okun and Patty Shaw combined for six hits, two RBIs and three runs. Montclair Prep won its last nine games and 13 of 14.

Saugus 4, Hart 2--Sophomore third baseman Chris Gills went three for three with two runs and an RBI and teammate Kim O’Leary added two hits and a run, pacing Saugus (24-2-1, 11-0) to the Foothill League victory. Lisa Kelley was three for three with a run for Hart.

Chatsworth 9, San Fernando 0--Nicole Grizzell (12-3) threw a three-hitter while catcher Tia Davidovich went two for four and drove in two runs for visiting Chatsworth (12-3) in a City Section Division 4-A quarterfinal game.

Parisa Plant and Sharleen Rubin each turned in two-for-four, one RBI performances for the Chancellors, who will meet San Pedro in a semifinal on Tuesday at South Gate.

BASEBALL

Taft 6, Reseda 0--Justin Collins retired 15 of 21 Reseda batters on ground balls, striking out two and walking one to lead visiting Taft (12-12, 7-6) to a Northwest Valley Conference victory.

Mike Andrisano’s three-run home run in the fifth inning broke the game open for the Toreadors.

Granada Hills 5, Kennedy 3--Five walks and two hits led to four runs in the fifth inning for host Granada Hills (13-5, 5-1) in a North Valley League game. Two Kennedy pitchers combined to walk 12 batters.

Sophomore John Bolyard (4-1) went the distance, scattering seven hits.

Burroughs 9, Hart 0--Robert Mena pitched a two-hitter, striking out nine and walking four, while Mike Bassett homered twice--a three-run shot in the first inning and a grand slam in the fifth--to hand visiting Hart (19-5, 11-1) its first Foothill League defeat.

Burroughs (12-10-1, 5-6) clinched third place and a playoff berth with the victory.

Crescenta Valley 5, Glendale 3--Crescenta Valley, The Times’ sixth-ranked team, clinched its first Pacific league championship since 1980 behind senior right-hander Garret Lee’s four-hitter. Lee struck out six and allowed no walks.

L.A. Baptist 4, Maranatha 2--The visiting Knights clinched their second consecutive Alpha League title at Arcadia Park. Matt Hernandez (9-1) struck out 13, retiring 11 batters in a row between the second and sixth innings.

Dana Berg scored two runs and Ryan O’Connell had two runs batted in for L.A. Baptist (17-5, 10-1).

First Lutheran 12, Pacific Christian 5--The visiting Falcons (17-3, 11-1) sent 11 batters to plate during a seven-run seventh inning of the Heritage League game at Whittier Narrows.

Joel Hernandez (9-2) went the distance, striking out 10 to earn the victory.

Providence 14, Windward 3--Tim Mirkovich and George Vargas each went two for three with three stolen bases for the visiting Pioneers (9-10, 5-7) in their Liberty League finale. Colin Bryant added three hits and two doubles.

SWIMMING

Michael Melzer, Daniel Burbach, Corey McFarlin and David Kung of Thousand Oaks set a school record of 1 minute 29.58 seconds in the 200-yard freestyle relay in the Southern Section Division I preliminaries at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach. The time eclipsed the previous mark of 1:32.05 set at the Royal Invitational earlier in the season.
