Matador Trio Make All-West Softball Team

Cal State Northridge softball players Amy Windmiller, Shannon Jones and Tamara Ivie were named to the All-Western regional team.

Windmiller went 22-2 with an 0.30 earned-run average and five no-hitters.

Third baseman Jones hit .438 with 11 home runs and 47 runs batted in. Utility player Ivie hit .420 with four homers and 38 RBIs.

Right-hander Heather Meyer of Antelope Valley College was named pitcher of the year on the all-state softball team.

Meyer was joined on the first team by Antelope Valley freshman catcher Donna Villa and freshman first baseman Jody Snelling.

Moorpark College swept the Western Athletic Conference awards, with Marcie James named pitcher of the year, Wendy Baertschiger player of the year and De Dow coach of the year.

Other Raiders on the All-WSC team are pitcher Jana Kovar, catcher Marie Goulette, first baseman Jennifer Edwards and outfielder Holly Bennett.

Also named were Canyons pitcher Marianne Winchester, infielder Jamie Dean and outfielder Kasey Miller; Ventura outfielder Christine Garcia and Pierce utility player Mandy Villasenor.

College Baseball

Mission College’s Ray Rivera was selected most valuable player and John Klitsner was named coach of the year in the Southern California Athletic Conference.

Rivera was 12-3 with a 2.78 ERA, helping the Free Spirit (26-17) to the conference title.

Mission third baseman Dave Valdez, shortstop Erik Lazerus, outfielders Gary Matthews and Dereck Ornelas, utilityman Rob Walley and designated hitter Francisco Flores also made the team.
