SOUTHERN SECTION TENNIS PLAYOFFS : Mission Viejo Wins Last Set to Upset Corona del Mar

Mission Viejo got a victory in the last set to upset fourth-seeded Corona del Mar, 10 2/3-10 1/3, in a Southern Section Division I boys’ tennis match Thursday at Corona del Mar.

Mission Viejo’s doubles team of Fernando Machuca and Christian Fernandez defeated Corona del Mar’s Tyler Stonebreaker and Greg Coleman in the last set, 6-3. Mission Viejo won six of nine sets in doubles.

Mission Viejo (11-9) started the season, 1-7. The Diablos, the second-place team from the South Coast League, advanced to play Beverly Hills match Tuesday in the quarterfinals. Beverly Hills beat San Clemente, 17 2/3-3 1/3, also Thursday.

Corona del Mar, the champion of the Sea View League, finished 18-3.

Dana Hills 15, Woodbridge 6--Dana Hills used a little incentive and a lot of talent to defeat Woodbridge at North Lake Country Club in Irvine. The Dolphins, who had beaten Woodbridge (16-6) this season, 17 2/3-3 1/3, were upset about a quote from Warrior Coach Joan Willett that appeared this week in a newspaper: “Our chances of winning are good. They had a great day against us last time and other teams in our league have played them close.”

Dana Hills players came out to prove they are seeded third for a reason.

“The things that were in the paper a few days ago gave our team more incentive to go out and win,” Dolphin Coach John Stephens said. “I knew they would play us tougher this time, but we’ve been working hard to get where we are.”

Dana Hills (21-0) came out strong, losing only two sets in the first round and one in the second to take a 10 1/3-3 2/3 lead.

Doubles player Carlos Betancourt got sick at lunch but played anyway. He and Justin Rimel won their first two sets at No. 3 doubles, 6-4, 6-0, but lost to Woodbridge’s No. 1 Adam Call and A.J. Thoryk, 6-3. Call and Thoryk swept their sets, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3.

Dana Hills faces University (16-4) Tuesday in the quarterfinals.
