Chaminade’s Desmond Takes Job at Valley

Dave Desmond has resigned as Chaminade High baseball coach to become an assistant coach at Valley College, he said Thursday.

“I no longer wanted to be a head coach,” Desmond said. “I wanted to learn under a good, solid head coach (Chris Johnson).”

Desmond led the Eagles to a 17-10 record and a berth in the Division I playoffs this season, their first appearance in the playoffs since they began playing at the Division I level in 1990.

Although the season ended Tuesday with a 12-2 loss to Channel Islands in the wild-card game, Desmond said he was not disappointed in his team, which some picked to win the Mission League.

“When you are 12 years old and dream of having Farrah Fawcett as your wife, does that mean that now you are disappointed with the wife you have? No,” Desmond said.

Desmond was 30-23 in two seasons at Chaminade. The Eagles were 4-22 the year before Desmond took over the team. Desmond, 30, also coached for five seasons at Highland Hall.

“I’m going to miss the players at Chaminade because they gave me an awful lot,” he said.
