SOFTBALL PLAYOFF ROUNDUP : Whittier Christian’s Goddu Has Six Hits, Shutout
Deborah Goddu was six for six with six runs batted in and pitched a one-hit shutout as Whittier Christian beat host Huntington Park St. Matthias, 17-0, Friday in the first round of the Southern Section Division V softball playoffs.
Goddu also had 10 strikeouts and Molly Dunagan had four RBIs for Whittier Christian (10-9), which will play Santa Monica Crossroads, the division’s defending champion, on Tuesday in the second round.
In other Division V softball:
Beaumont 5, Southern California Christian 1--Carrie Ridgeway singled in the seventh inning and scored SCC’s only run on two consecutive Beaumont errors. Beaumont (11-11) scored four runs in the sixth inning. SCC finished the season 11-9.
Murrieta Valley 3, Calvary Chapel 2--Heather Jordan singled in Carrie Blue with Murrieta’s (18-4) winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Keri Przygocki had eight strikeouts for Calvary Chapel, which finished11-17.
In Division IV softball:
San Pedro Mary Star of the Sea 4, Aliso Niguel 0--Candice Heath was two for two, including a double, for Aliso Niguel (11-11). Heath struck out three batters in seven innings.
In Division VI softball:
Liberty Christian 11, Corona Christian 2--Courtney Carruthers had two hits and three RBIs for host Liberty (13-7).
St. Margaret’s 8, Pacific Shores 1--Monica Arreola pitched a one-hitter and had a home run for St. Margaret’s (12-2) to advance.
