Share

Today’s pairings (at Cypress College): Division I--Alhambra Keppel (17-0) vs. Garden Grove (15-1), 2:30 p.m.; Division II--Long Beach Jordan (15-2) vs. Rosemead (13-1), 2:30 p.m.

Last year’s champions: Division I--Keppel; Division II--Etiwanda.

Outlook: Garden Grove will have its hands full in the Division I championship; Keppel has won its last 96 matches, dominating a sport that was introduced to the Southern Section in 1980. The Aztecs are going after their sixth title since 1987 and their fifth in a row. The team dominated the individual finals two weeks ago by winning three of five events. The leaders include Brian Tan and Nhi Phung, who each play on two doubles teams. The third-seeded Argonauts are riding high after defeating second-seeded La Puente Nogales, 10-9, in the semifinals. Crucial victories came from their top girls’ doubles team of Lien Ly and Huong Nguyen, who swept both matches on Monday, and junior Judy Pak, who is undefeated in girls’ singles during the playoffs. Argonauts Coach Vicki Toutz says she believes her team’s balance will be a key in the match. Rosemead should have the edge in the lower division. The Panthers were a Division I quarterfinalist last season. They are coming off a 10-9 semifinal victory over second-seeded Hacienda Heights Wilson.
