For the second consecutive year, and the third time in five years, the Muir boys’ track team is the Southern Section Division I champion.

The Mustangs, led by Kenny Haslip, scored 65 points at last week’s championship meet at Long Beach City College. Long Beach Poly finished second with 35 points.

Haslip, a senior who will attend USC in the fall, won the 110-high hurdles, the 300-intermediate hurdles and was a member of the winning 400-meter relay.

Haslip was one of several San Gabriel Valley athletes who won individual events. Winners and other qualifiers will compete in Friday’s Masters Meet at Cerritos College.

San Gabriel Valley winners included Obea Moore of Muir, who won the Division I 400-meters; Stephen Miller of Maranatha (Division IV 800); Warren Wolf of San Marino (Division III 3,200); Joe Garcia of Maranatha (Division IV 3,200); and Jeremy Lingenfelter of Claremont (Division II pole vault).

Girls winners included Joney David of Charter Oak (Division II 100); Heather Miller of Westridge (Division IV 200 and 400); Allison Twist of San Marino (Division III 3,200), Stephanie Jones of Walnut (Division II long jump); Susan Reeves of South Hills (Division III long jump); Amber Roberts of Muir (Division I triple jump); Angela McHenry of South Hills (Division III triple jump) and Katy Grubbs of South Pasadena (Division III shotput).

Area high school baseball teams opened play in the Southern Section baseball playoffs last week.

Here are the results of second-round games involving area teams.

Division I: Nogales beat Alhambra, 5-4; Rowland lost to Crescenta Valley, 12-3.

Division II: Northview lost to Temecula Valley, 6-5.

Division III: Top-seeded Bishop Amat was defeated by Los Altos, 3-2.

Division IV: Top-seeded San Marino beat El Monte, 3-2; South Pasadena edged Moorpark, 1-0; Monrovia lost to Atascadero, 15-7; Gladstone defeated Calabasas, 6-0; Temple City beat San Gorgonio, 4-0.

Division V: Pasadena Poly defeated St. Bonaventure, 10-5.

Winners advanced to Friday’s third round.

Here are the results of Tuesday’s second-round games involving area teams:

Division II: Charter Oak defeated Bellflower, 3-2; Bishop Amat beat Diamond Bar, 5-0; Wilson lost to Hesperia, 5-4.

Division III: South Hills defeated Ramona, 5-0; San Dimas lost to Quartz Hill, 5-2; St. Lucy’s edged El Segundo, 1-0.

Division IV: Rosemead beat Bell-Jeff, 2-1; La Canada defeated Atascadero, 4-0.

Division V: Pasadena Poly lost to Bishop, 7-6, in eight innings; Alverno lost to La Reina, 14-0.

Winners advance to Friday’s third round.

Four athletes from Mark Keppel and one from San Marino won Southern Section badminton championships.

Keppel’s Qui Nguy and Brian Tan won the boys’ doubles title and Nhi Phung and Annie Tran of Keppel won the girls’ doubles title. Phung and Tan also won the mixed doubles championship.

Lily Chen of San Marino won the girls’ singles title.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

Nicole Irving of Mt. San Antonio College won the long jump at the community college state meet last weekend at Cerritos College.

Irving won with a leap of 19 feet 5 inches.

The Citrus College baseball team was eliminated from the Southern California Regional of the state tournament with a 6-4 loss to Rancho Santiago.

Citrus committed four errors in the game. All of Rancho Santiago’s runs were unearned.

James Baltazar had three hits for Citrus.

Clark Maloney, an assistant coach for the Mt. SAC men’s basketball team last season, has been named coach of the Mounties.

Maloney replaces Ralph Osterkamp, who is retiring.

Marc Ruh, who built successful water polo and swimming programs at Walnut during the past five years, has been named water polo and swimming coach at Mt. SAC. Ruh replaces men’s swimming and water polo coach Roy Wilks, and women’s swimming coach Sue La Comb, both of whom are retiring.

COLLEGES

Five athletes from Cal Poly Pomona are competing in the NCAA Division II track and field championships that begin today at Raleigh, N.C.

Junior DeVon Edwards, who finished second in the 400 as a freshman and third as a sophomore, leads a Bronco contingent that also includes Jodie Warr (discus), Nicole Beaureguard (shotput), Rosetta Hunter (800 meters) and Aldora George (100 and 400 hurdles).

Cal Poly Pomona tennis players Jauffrey Faustini and Mike Burgess were eliminated from the Division II tennis championships at Kansas City after suffering second-round losses in singles matches.

Faustini lost to Danny Colangelo of Elon in three sets and Burgess lost in straight sets to Dominick Hinds of Jacksonville State.

Three Cal Poly Pomona baseball players were named first-team All-California Collegiate Athletic Assn. by league coaches.

Outfielder Tom Eide, who batted .362, is a two-time selection. Catcher Brian Dennis (.370, 11 home runs) and pitcher/designated hitter Dave Anderlik (.400) made the team for the first time.

Pomona finished 30-25-1 and 15-15 in the CCAA.

Azusa Pacific is playing host to the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics outdoor track and field championships today through Saturday.

More than 1,000 athletes from over 100 colleges are expected to compete for 44 titles.

Azusa Pacific has won 10 men’s championships in the past 12 years.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Scott Hofman, South Pasadena--Hofman pitched a one-hitter as the Tigers advanced to the second round of the Division IV baseball playoffs with a 3-0 victory over Salesian.

Hofman improved his record to 7-3.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

* A wrestling program for youths ages 10 to 18 is being formed at Rowland Heights Park in Rowland Heights. Club and tournament participation will also be offered. Sign-ups are Tuesday and Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Information: (818) 912-6774.

Registration is open for the La Verne University basketball camp, which is open to boys and girls in grades four through 11.
