SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Undefeated Calvary Chapel swept Cerritos Valley Christian, 15-4, 15-3, 15-10, in a Southern Section Division III boys’ volleyball semifinal match Wednesday at Estancia High.

With the victory, Calvary Chapel advanced to Saturday’s final against Santa Ynez at Cerritos College.

The Eagles (17-0) seemed to put on a clinic in the first two games, while the Crusaders (13-7) gave no indication as to how they got this far in the tournament.

Valley Christian made 16 errors in the first game, eight in the second and could muster only seven points, most of which came on Calvary Chapel mistakes.

A nine-point run in the first game, and four three-point runs in the second should have firmed up Calvary Chapel’s emotional advantage, but the Eagles refused to become complacent and give the Crusaders a chance to come back.

“It would have been easy to relax (after the first two games),” Eagle Coach Chuck Wright said. “And we haven’t been playing well. We beat Valley in four (games) just before the season ended, and in the playoffs we haven’t had a challenge.”

In the first two games Valley Christian’s passing was poor, but the Crusaders seemed to regroup in the third, and actually led twice, 3-0 and 5-4. But the Eagles capitalized on 12 errors and never let Valley Christian tie again.

Down, 11-10, the Crusaders committed a ball-handling error, Mark Vanderlay hit wide, Aaron Fountain and Steve Lefevre blocked Mark Overdine and Fountain spiked off Jeremy Debee for the match.
