Collegiate Baseball Honors Four Cal State Fullerton Players

Four Cal State Fullerton players have been named to Collegiate Baseball’s All-American teams.

Titan starting pitcher Matt Wagner and reliever Ted Silva were named to the second team, and pitcher Mike Parisi and second baseman Jeff Ferguson were picked for the third team.

Three members of Saddleback College’s State championship golf team will play for four-year schools next year, Saddleback announced.

Aki Amaya, a freshman transfer from San Jose State and graduate of Van Nuys Birmingham High, will play at San Diego State; Colin McElderry, a sophomore from Northern Ireland, will play at San Jose State, and Jason McDaniel, from San Clemente High, will play at Cal State Stanislaus.

Amaya, who had a 75.8 average, was Saddleback’s top golfer and Orange Empire Conference player of the year. McElderry averaged 76.0 this season and was medalist in two tournaments. McDaniel averaged 76.2 and shot in the 70s in all but two of 25 rounds this season.

Top college and high school swimmers from throughout the state will participate in the International Grand Challenge Senior Swimming Invitational starting Friday at Heritage Park Aquatic Complex in Irvine.

The three-day meet, hosted by the Irvine Novaquatics Swim Club, will feature Stanford’s Angie Wester-Krieg and Lisa Jacob. Also swimming will be nationally ranked Jessica Tong and many of the winners and top finalists in the recent Southern Section Championships.

Woodbridge’s Derya Buyukuncu, the national high school record holder in the 100-yard backstroke, will be swimming one of his last meets in Southern California before he leaves for the World Championships in Rome in the fall. Olympians Bjorn Zikarsky of Germany and Gary Anderson of Canada will also be participating.

Preliminaries start at 9 a.m., with finals scheduled for 5 p.m.
