SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The Dorsey High boys’ bid to repeat as team track champion was never in doubt in the City Section finals Thursday at Birmingham High.

The Dons amassed 75 points, scoring in 11 of 15 events, to become the first school in seven years to win consecutive City titles. It was the fifth championship for Dorsey, which also won titles in 1966, ’68 and ’89.

Washington, powered by Jim McElroy’s victories in the 100 (10.81) and 200 (21.47), was second with 42 points and El Camino Real was third with 40. Roosevelt and Belmont tied with Granada Hills for sixth with 24.

“We didn’t really focus on the team title, but scoring in every event,” said Dorsey senior Anthony Mabry, who placed second in the 110-meter high hurdles in 14.84 seconds and sixth in the 300 intermediate hurdles in 40.34. “If everybody placed in the events they were in, we thought we would come out on top again or at least in the first two.”

As it turned out, about the only uncertainty for Dorsey was its reign in the relays.

Fairfax gave Dorsey a scare but could not prevent the Dons from capturing their second consecutive 400-meter relay title and an unprecedented sixth 1,600-meter relay title in a row.

Rodrick Brown out-leaned Fairfax’s Az-zahir Hakim to give Dorsey a 0.02-second victory in the 400 relay in 40.68. In the 1,600 relay, Gene Shepard withstood a late charge from Jason Lewis of Fairfax as the Dons squeaked by the Lions, 3:17.19 to 3:17.76.

“Last year, we had a lot more depth,” said Dorsey Coach Ralph Tilley. “I don’t know which title is more gratifying. This win was a lot harder mentally on the coaching staff. I was hoping to just win, 30 points or one point would have been fine. The kids came through with heart. Everybody put out.”

Mabry ran on both relays along with Leo Settle, who finished second in the 100 and 200 meters in 10.85 and 21.63. Jabulani Smith-Freeman was fourth in the long jump and triple jump and ran a leg on the 400 relay.

Shepard and Anthony Wheeler, a member of the 1,600-meter relay, were second in the 400 (48.76) and 800 (1:58.49) while Keith Friday added a third-place finish in the high jump (6-4) for the Dons.

The top three finishers in each event advance to the State meet Friday and Saturday at Cerritos College.

In girls’ competition, Betty Butler of Dorsey won the 400 and 800 in 57.41 and 2:19.10. The sophomore also anchored the Dons’ 1,600-meter relay team to third in 4:04.15 as Dorsey tied Westchester for second with 47 points. Gardena won its first title with 75 points.

Alexis Glenn of Dorsey finished third in the 100 hurdles in 16.38 and placed first in the high jump, clearing 4-10 to win on fewer misses.

An untied shoelace did not prevent Keisha Griffis of Washington from defending her 300-meter low hurdle title in 43.59. The junior also finished second in the 100 hurdles. Humberto Sanchez of South Gate qualified State meet Friday and Saturday in the 3,200, winning in 9:35.35, and in the 1,600, placing third in 4:29.07. Ray Duarte of Roosevelt won the 800 in 1:57.86 and Amar Brisco of Washington sailed 23-0 to win the long jump.
