The San Marino and Maranatha baseball teams have advanced to Southern Section championship games on Friday.

San Marino defeated Atascadero, 9-8, in the Division IV semifinals on Tuesday.

San Marino will play Yucaipa, an 8-5 winner over Colton, in the title game.

Maranatha defeated Serrano, 4-2, in the Division V semifinals on Tuesday. Maranatha will play Santa Ana Calvary Chapel, a 3-2 winner over Big Bear, for the championship.

Three San Gabriel Valley softball teams have a shot at Southern Section titles.

In Division II, Bishop Amat defeated Canyon Country Canyon, 3-1, in a semifinal game Tuesday. Bishop Amat plays Fullerton, a 2-1 winner over Saugus, for the title on Friday.

St. Lucy’s, a 1-0 winner over South Torrance, will meet Redondo, a 5-1 winner over South Hills, in the Division III final on Friday.

La Canada beat Valley View, 1-0 in 14 innings, to earn a berth in the Division IV final against Santa Maria St. Joseph, a 4-0 winner over Corona Centennial.

Mark Keppel continued its dominance in badminton by winning its fifth consecutive Southern Section championship.

The Aztecs, under Coach Harold George, defeated Garden Grove, 15-4, for their 97th consecutive victory.

Nhi Phung concluded her four-year varsity career without a defeat.

Several San Gabriel Valley athletes will compete in the state track and field championships that begin Friday at Cerritos College.

Southern Section champion Muir qualified the most individuals for State based on performances at last week’s Masters Meet at Cerritos.

San Gabriel Valley boy qualifiers include Obea Moore of Muir and Brian Peterson of Rowland in the 800; Jeff Truman of Covina (pole vault); Mike Russell of Rowland (400); Jeremy Lingenfelter of Claremont (shotput); Ken Haslip of Muir and DeLewis Johnson of Nogales (110 high hurdles and 300 intermediate hurdles), and Rich Pitchford of Charter Oak (high jump).

Girl qualifiers include Kelly Moten of Muir (100 high hurdles and 300 low hurdles); Heather Sumpter of Muir (100 and 200-meter dash); Tori Edwards of Pomona (200); Annie Ebiner of St. Lucy’s (3,200); Amber Roberts of Muir (triple jump); Peka Laulu of Nogales; Katy Grubbs of South Pasadena, and Armika Hughes of South Hills (shotput).

Porfiro Frausto has been named football coach at Blair, replacing Gene Zeller, who resigned in April.

Frausto was the sophomore football coach at St. Francis last season. Before that, he was an assistant at Blair for four seasons.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

Infielder Rich Hagen and designated hitter Kevin Schramm of Citrus have been selected to the state all-star baseball team.

Hagen, a sophomore, batted .409 for the Owls, who advanced to the finals of the Southern California Regional.

Schramm, a sophomore, batted .467.

Mt. San Antonio College pitcher Brett Tomko, a sophomore who was 8-2 with a 1.30 earned-run average, was named to the second team.

Tomko was one of four Mt. SAC players selected as All-South Coast Conference players by league coaches. Other Mounties who made the team are first baseman Art Baeza (.389), second baseman Al Moreno (.375) and utility man Dave Hernandez (4-2, 2.11 ERA, .259 batting average).

Pasadena City College outfielder Ethan Rodriguez was selected first-team all-conference for the second year in a row. Rodriguez batted .344.

COLLEGES

The Azusa Pacific men’s track team won its 10th National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics national title in 12 years last weekend at Azusa.

Nine athletes scored for the Cougars, who got 79 of their winning 82 points from participants in the field events.

Central State was second with 66 points.

Central State won the women’s title with 96 points. Azusa Pacific finished sixth with 40 1/2.

Eight Azusa Pacific men and seven Cougar women earned All-American status by finishing among the top six in their events. The men: Ben Beal (triple jump, high jump); Rene Bustamonte (shotput, discus); Tim Cockrell (pole vault); John Gachau (10,000); Hong Li (long jump, triple jump); Tage Peterson (decathlon, long jump); David Pope (decathlon), and Luke Walker (pole vault).

Women’s All-Americans are Michelle Campbell (100 high hurdles, 1,600 relay); Nicole DeVries (1,600 relay); Carmen Gage (heptathlon, 1,600 relay); Danielle Kirk (3,000 walk); Debbie Malachowski (discus, javelin); Liz Sutton (1,600 relay), and Fatima Yusuf (400).

Emiliano Escandon, a sophomore shortstop for Pomona-Pitzer, has been selected Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference player of the year.

Escandon batted .486 in conference play with six home runs and 32 runs batted in.

Pomona-Pitzer catcher Tom Keller and pitcher Jarod Kula also were selected first-team All-SCIAC.

Mike Susank won the hammer and Jason Rhodes won the 800 to lead the Claremont-Mudd men’s track team to a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Division III championships last week at Naperville, Ill.

It was the Stags highest finish ever, eclipsing the seventh-place finish of 1993.

Susank won his event with a throw of 197 feet 6 inches. Rhodes won the 800 in 1 minute 50.2 seconds.

Ramsey Gerber of Claremont was named Division III freshman of the year by the Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Assn.

Gerber lost in the quarterfinals of the Division III singles and doubles championships.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Nhi Phung, Keppel--Phung, a senior, completed her prep badminton career without a defeat and helped lead the Aztecs to their fifth consecutive Southern Section championship.

Phung won titles in singles, doubles and mixed doubles.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Jason Rhodes, Claremont-Mudd--Rhodes won the 800 meters and helped lead Claremont-Mudd to its sixth-place finish at the NCAA Division III championships.

Rhodes is also one of 10 recipients of a post-graduate scholarship awarded by the National Assn. of College Directors of Athletics. Rhodes will join the other recipients at a presentation Monday at Disney World in Orlando, Fla.

MISCELLANY

* A slow-pitch softball tournament for men’s C and D division teams is scheduled for June 18 at Memorial Park in Azusa. Entry is $185 a team. Information: (818) 334-261, Ext. 320.
