WORLD CUP '94 / DAILY REPORT

Midfielder John Harkes, who arrived recently from England but has yet to play a game with the U.S. team, said at halftime he was worried that the U.S. backline was appearing somewhat vulnerable.

"The way we are standing flat," he said, "I fear that one ball over the top will get us."

Harkes, who said he didn't expect any problems fitting in with the team after a few more practices, was asked what had been the most surprising thing he had noticed about the U.S. team upon his arrival.

"Alexi Lalas' beard," he said.
