PREP BASEBALL : Cabrera Lifts Franklin to City 3-A Championship

Oscar Cabrera went two for three and drove in the game-winning run Monday to lead Franklin to a 2-1 victory and the City 3-A Division championship at Dodger Stadium.

Franklin finished 21-4-1.

With the score tied, 1-1, Cabrera hit a double in the bottom of the fifth inning to drive in Jeff Deno, who had singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice fly by Rick Catano and advanced to third on a passed ball by Huntington Park catcher Raul Ocequeda.

Catano (8-1) gave up eight hits and struck out three while earning the win.

“I sat back more and at the end, I gave it all I had and it came through for me,” Catano said.

Mario Arambula (6-4) struck out eight in the loss for Huntington Park (12-8).

Franklin’s Lorenso Marquez started the scoring in the fourth inning after he singled, stole second and scored on an error by Huntington Park first-baseman Armando Matos. Huntington Park’s Hugo Villagrana responded in the top of the fifth inning when he singled, advanced to second on a single by Juan Carillo and scored on a single by Matos.

El Camino Real 6, Chatsworth 6: In the City Section 4-A championship, Chatsworth scored five runs in the seventh to send the game to extra innings.

It was still tied heading into the ninth.

Trailing, 6-1, and facing Randy Wolf, who had allowed only an infield single until that point, Chatsworth scored five runs on four hits in the top of the seventh inning to tie the score.

Wolf hit Danny Martin, who was pinch hitting for Mike Amado. Martin later scored on a double by Eric Rovner.

Rovner advanced to third on a single by Rod Daryabigi and scored on a single by Ray Daryabigi.

Ray Daryabigi advanced to second on a single by Bryan LaCour. Both Ray Daryabigi and LaCour scored on consecutive errors by Matt Tays and Justin Martin.

El Camino began quickly, scoring five runs on two hits in the bottom of the first inning.

Chatsworth pitcher Jim DeBiase walked Justin Martin, the first batter he faced. Martin advanced to second on a groundout and scored after Craig Carlton hit a grounder to shallow right field.

Wolf, who was intentionally walked in his first at-bat, advanced to second on Carlton’s single, and Carlton scored on a first-pitch double to deep center by Billy Burnette.

Matt Tays reached first on an error by Bryan La Cour, which also advanced Burnett to third.

Burnett later scored on a passed ball by catcher Brandon Murphy and another error by La Cour scored Tays.

Chatsworth struck in the top of the third inning, after Wolf walked Jeremy Tayahua, Ray Daryabigi singled and Wolf hit La Cour to advance Tayahua to third.

Tayahua scored on a balk.
